For me I think good timing, maintaining the groove. That said, I wish my playing was more melodic.... something to work on...

What is your strength?

I bring the witty banter.

And I usually bring beer, too. Drummer says this makes me his fave bass player of all time. Dude really likes his beer.

A good ear. Decent vocals. Slightly above average technique. Not a dick.

Lemme guess, you play in a jazz trio with a pianist and a drummer?

All kidding aside, one of the guitarists in my former band used to compliment me on making every song groove so hard. I'm not a technical player and I am way less melodic than I wish I was but according to him (and the singer) I can groove.

I also play well with any kind of drummer, for some reason. I've played with technically gifted drummers and with rhythmically challenged ones, and I tend to play roughly at the same level most times.

But above all, if I like the band and the music, I'll bring dedication to the table. Come in prepared, on time, ready to rock. Hunt for gigs, chat up the band to friends and do any amount of PR needed.

I'm nitpicky - I like things to be in order and correct, so I learn and practice the songs we're doing ahead of time. No magic there, but you'd be surprised at the kudos that earns me.

Besides my previous post (my ear), in my current group, I'll add: I own an AEB, I can learn songs fast (back to my ear).

If we had a like button, I would have hit it at least five times. Compliments to all the thread winners. I think my strength is a sense of melody, arrangement and harmonization. I am not that strong at keeping the groove. I know that everybody would expect it to be the other way.
And I just bring my amp.

Good time, play appropriate lines, can solo if asked to do so, know a lot of (cover) tunes and can fake the ones I don't pretty well. I'm old and overweight so I make the rest of the band look good.
