Driving around the back roads of Kentucky listening to my favorite Yellowjackets CD, Yellowjackets. Not easy to drive the speed limit with this CD.

You reminded me of this very rare recording of the Yellowjackets backing Gino Vannelli on his second biggest hit:

It's only available on a Japanese release of the Yellowjacket's Club Nocturne

The fact there's a Highway To Hell and only a Stairway To Heaven says a lot about anticipated traffic numbers

Is there anything Yellowjackets didn't slather Velveeta all over? The original version is superior. Way more drama.

I agree. I'm not a big fan of this version, or really, any of Gino's remakes of his older songs. The originals are near-perfect for me.

They are pretty impressive live, though. I saw them open for Larry Carlton in 1987 at Ruth Eckerd Hall in Tampa. Fantastic players, especially Haslip.

Prince has always had great drummers, but the drummer in 3rdEyeGirl is a far cry from funky. How did her overly rigid playing make the cut?

Meh. There are plenty of attractive female drummers out there who play better than her. Would they be willing to endure Prince's "quirks"? :idk

I get it. It's actually an ok band. The bass player is clearly the strongest player within the trio of girls. I'm sure this was Prince just trying to create a pretty backdrop for himself. Having listened to the record, his tone and soloing are still top-notch.

Oh, that's Frank Lucas's old drummer, Hannah Ford. Yeah, sounds to me like she's the rockier part of the rhythm section in the funk-rock mélange. Not sure how I feel about it. What I've heard of Art Official Age is phaaaat, though.

On the subject of killin' female drummers, how about that Anika Nilles?

Great article. For be both tracks that feature Andy Allo ("What It Feels Like" and "Time") are clear stand-outs on ART OFFICIAL AGE.

Prince needs someone who can groove, even in a rock context. Someone like Nikki Glaspie or Kim Thompson.

He should just put a bra and wig on Dave Weckl and be done with it.

Seriously cool keyboard content: Rhodes, Minimoog, Solina String Ensemble, ARP 2600 and 2 EMS Synthi's (Played by a dude in a purple helmet, no less). And Clive Bunker (ex-Tull) on drums!
