Even though I haven't seen it yet, for those who are interested in the roots of American country music, the recently released documentary movie about the Carter Family, "The Winding Stream", could be interesting:

Did anybody mention the 1980's "One Trick Pony'? A great movie written by & staring Paul Simon and a who's who of monsters at the time: Booker T, Steve Gadd, Tony Levin, Eric Gale, Hiram Bullock & Hugh McCracken. It's about an aging, irrelevant rockstar trying to recapture lightning in a bottle with a new label. This movie spawned such deep pocket grooves like "Late in the Evening".

My favorite documentary has already been mentioned, Standing in the Shadows of Motown. I got Last Waltz for Christmas and have thoroughly enjoyed it, as long as I play it loud!

As far as concert videos go, I've really enjoyed "All My Friends: Celebrating the Songs & Voice of Gregg Allman" Chuck Leavell is awesome, and Rami Jaffee does the organ right - including a fine solo in Melissa.

"Building The Wrecking Ball", a documentary about the making of Emmy Lou Harris' Wrecking Ball album. A look at Daniel Lanois production genius. Can't find a video clip though, I think it may be copywrite protected.

"Tom Dowd and the Language of Music" was fascinating. I'd seen his name on albums but didn't know the depth and breadth of the man. I highly recommend it to all.

Incredibly fascinating---What do Dickey Betts and the Atomic Bomb have in common?
A) They're are very explosive and have potential to cause damage.
B) Tom Dowd worked on both.

I'm in a Jazz mood this week. I have to get this out of my system before tomorrow night. smile The Parker story kind of blew me away. I didn't realize he was only 34 when he died.

Now I am listening to this. Kind of Blue is still one of my favorite albums ever.

Just caught the documentary on Kansas, "Kansas: Miracles Out of Nowhere" on Palladia. I don't know if it's still running, but I saw it was also on VH1 (standard def) as well.

Cool movie. Focuses on the beginnings of the band through the successful years up to (and including) Point of Know Return. No dirt, but a great feel good doc.

I know, I was even a crowdfunding supporter of the film. Hangs head in shame...

Seriously great, deeply nerdy film.

Just got to see this tonight at the Mission Creek festival (spring music/film/literary festival held here in Iowa City.) They had a local guy a with a Moog Modular and Euro rack system give a talk and a short performance prior to the film. One of those nights when you are glad you live in a (slightly) quirky college town. Film was pretty good with a lot of interesting historical footage. I thought they should have spent a little time just explaining basic synthesis concepts for the audience. For non-musicians, the discussion of oscillators, filters and envelopes has got to be a little confusing. But overall, very interesting for the insiders...and oh, all that gear porn!

Good doc, just saw it. The only dirt---the whole band exposes steven tyler for being the dooshbag that he is (he tried unsuccessfully to pull the plug on Kansas when they were opening for a-smith).
