Hi all

My wife's youngest sister is very ill, a year ago she had an operation because she had an ovary cancer.

The docter told her then he had removed the tumour completely, but recently she was having pain again and they discovered cancer in her liver now.

This seems to be a very rare kind of a cancer and it can not be cured by radiation therapy or chemo.

We are in dispair, they are going to try a new medicine on her, but there is not much knowledge about that in Holland.

Some six months ago I watched a TV program on Discovery channel about sharks. Sharks don't get cancer at all and American docters found something in the sharks liver that protect them from getting cancer.

It also showed people who were terminal, but with a new medicine, made out of the sharks liver, many of them recovered from their illness.

Anybody who gan give some information please?

Thanks a lot.

Hi Han,

I'm really sorry to hear that.. \:\( I hope she pulls through and everything works out...

I'm searching through discovery channels website right now (discovery.com) for a video that matches your description..they sell videos of their shows and some transcripts too I believe...I'll keep searching and when I find something, I'll post it here and email you with it...If I can't find something there, I'll call them later today once they open and see if they can help better over the phone..

Again, really sorry to hear that \:\(

Peace,

Harold

Sign...I am with you...giving you and your sister in law.

One of the best things I've recently heard about, and this was on MSNBC, so that's a reliable source...

It sounds like quackery at first, but actual medical research is backing it up.

For centuries the Chinese have been using something derived from the wormwood plant to control malaria. Now, a lot of medicines are derived from plants. Apparently, some substance in this plant attacks the iron in cells. Cancerous cells have abnormally high concentrations of iron. This substance attacks it, leaving the lower-iron surrounding cells intact. Their current state of research has gone into finding a substance that will even more concentrate and increase the iron content of cancer cells, making them even more susceptible. Latest word is that they'd found it.

I would say leave no stone unturned. I hope your sister in law is ready to become a lab "guinea pig" in order to save her life. Liver cancer is not good.

I'll see if I can locate the article and post a link...

FOUND IT!!!! HERE'S THE LINK!!!

http://www.msnbc.com/news/667259.asp?cp1=1

Make sure she asks her doctor...and if her doctor won't listen, find one who will.

While the test was done on breast cancer patients, perhaps it's true of other cancers...

Good luck and Godspeed...

Alright. While I couldn't find the video that you had mentioned, and transcripts of the shows are not available online, I did some searching and found some info.

First, the bad news (I hate being the guy to give the bad news)

Sharks DO get cancer. The myth that they don't comes from an research showing that sharks are less susceptible to cancers, but certain types of cancers can in fact develop in sharks. This myth was hyped by a certain Dr. William Lane, PhD, who used incomplete research to create the myth, and has exploited it for commercial gain through selling shark cartilage powder pills and book sales.

The most commonly accepted reason that sharks are less susceptible to cancer is because is they are constructed mainly of cartilage, which contain anti-angiogenetic* qualities, and they are also less exposed to carcinogenic chemicals. (* Angiogenesis is the growth of blood vessels which supply nutrients to the cancerous cells, thereby helping tumours spread.)

However, there may still be some hope. Since cartilage (in general) contains anti-angiogenetic properties, studies are being conducted where researchers are attempting to isolate the proteins in cartilage that makes it anti-angiogenetic, injecting them into the bloodstream, and have seen favourable results.

The studies have been going on for some 30 years, and a recent study presented at the annual Association for Cancer Research by a McGill University researcher.....

Quote:
showed that an entirely new type of extract made from cartilage (in this case the dogfish shark cartilage) did, in fact, show promise as a substance that would prolong the life of cancer patients by, indeed, cutting off a tumor's blood supply.

Interestingly, these chemicals do not have to come from shark cartilage but are present in just about any cartilage. Apparently, sharks were chosen because they are abundant and fishermen typically discarded the cartilage after harvesting the shark meat. A specific biochemical treatment method is used to extract the anti-angiogenesis components from the cartilage.

Tumors completely disappeared in several patients. Some patients, who had no response at all to standard cancer treatment and had a life expectancy of less then eight months, were still living almost three years later. None of the patients had any significant side effects. The cartilage extracts are showing promise in lung as well as blood cell cancers, as reported in the research.

The National Cancer Institute, which has limited research funds, found the results so promising that they are allocating funds for a larger study of patients to see if they do benefit from cartilage extracts and the ability of these chemicals to shut off the blood supply to cancer.

Let's not give up on cartilage extracts yet, but I would discourage you from using the common shark cartilage pills currently available. This new substance, known as Neovastat, though not yet approved, will be available on a prescription basis.

So there you have it. I hope this helps.. \:\)

Peace,

Harold

(I'll email you the links to the above info if you wish)

Tedster, thanks a million for the great link!!

Harold, that's the medicine I was thinking about, the one that's cutting off the tumor's blood supply, thank you for doing a great job.

Please Email or post the links here, perhaps other guys/gals are also interested, I mean she's not the only one isn't she?

It really feels good to know peeps on the other side of the planet being friend enough to help you, thanks again.

I know my baby sister in law since she was a nine year old kid. We've been through a lot of problems, but also had great times with her, she is a very nice mother of two young kids and I will do anything to save her.

So any help is more than welcome.

Peace.

I know a cancer survivor who was given 6 months to live...that was 10 years ago! She didn't like the answer from the doctors, so she did her own research. She had tried chemotherapy and radiation with no success so she stopped doing it completely because because she felt it destroyed the immune system. She got IV drips of vitamin C every week, took a lot of vitamins and enzymes (like CoQ 10), ate only organic food, that sort of thing. She had to have an operation to get rid of the cancer, but it never came back because she maintained this type of lifestyle. She says it's very important to keep your body's pH neutral to base -- takes baths in salt water and baking soda, that sort of thing.

Now, this doesn't mean any of this would work for anyone else. The point is she figured she had six months, so she spent that time researching and trying things to see what worked. She was lucky, because she hit on the right combination for her, just in time. But that combination is different for everyone. There are many doctors involved in alternative therapies, unfortunately many of them are nut cases but some are very intelligent and have saved many lives. Start looking for these types of alternative doctors NOW and you may get lucky...luck is definitely a big part of this.

Oh yes, also check for allergic reactions that weaken the immune system...the KEY seems to be to strengthen the immune system, which then creates an environment in which cancer can't thrive. Don't get your hopes up unrealistically, but don't give up either. Miracles CAN happen -- ask Scott Jones on another thread, who was supposed to be dead by now too.

I wish you all the luck in the world.

Thanks a lot Craig, it's very difficult to get the right alternative doctor and there is not much time left, but I'll do the best I can.

I am using the Q10 for almost twenty years myself now and I can recommend it to anybody.

I found out my sister in law is having a new medication soon, I guess she becomes a 'guenia pig' and she has to sign for doing so.
It's a new medicine, you can find something about it on
http://www.ikca.nl/index.html?/trials/content/8_2_1.html
the number is E62005 , anybody who knows more?

Thanks again, peace.

Sign,

I'm very sorry to hear about your sister-in-law, and I hope that she gets the very best treatment available.

I strongly recommend that you read Lance Armstrong's book, "It's Not About The Bike." As you know, Armstrong conquered testicular cancer and went on to win the Tour de France, twice. When he discovered that he had cancer, he decided that he would fire any doctor who was not 100% confident that the cancer could be cured. He would just walk out of their office and make an appointment with someone else. He said that he wanted to be surrounded by health professionals with a winning mentality, not a defeatist attitude.

I also recommend "Anatomy of an Illness As Perceived by the Patient" by Norman Cousins, the former editor of the Saturday Review magazine. Cousins was diagnosed with cancer in the 1960's, when the survival rate was far lower than it is today. One of the things he did to keep his spirits high was to watch funny movies every day. "Anatomy of an Illness" is a classic and comes highly recommended.

You'll find both of these books at Amazon .

It would also be a good idea to get Dr. Weil\'s perspective. Dr. Weil is a Harvard educated medical doctor who is also a renowned expert on natural remedies. Dr. Weil will tell you what works and why, and he'll also tell you what DOESN'T work.

I do NOT recommend abandoning traditional medical treatment, but I hope that these resources will supplement the treatment that your sister-in-law is receiving currently.

Best wishes to both of you!

Dan, thanks a lot, I really appreciate. There is one small problem, she can read just a little English, so I'll try to find out if those books are available in Dutch also.

I must also be very careful with her and must find out how much she can handle now.

Peace.

Wow, you are in a very difficult situation. My advice would be to move, move, move! Meaning, FAST. You know there's not much time. If she can pursue researching therapies full-time, that would be best, given the time frame involved.

A little encouragement... my neighbor, two years ago, was given six months to live. No hope. Rare kind of stomach cancer. Toward the end, after he refused to keep taking radiation and chemo, they heard about some stomach cancer specialist somewhere and they hopped on a plane and went to him. Whatever the guy did, it worked. Last I heard, my neighbor is fine now!

On the other hand, anything to do with the liver is especially deadly. I'd work as fast as possible. And I'd second the notion to clean up the diet and environment to be as pure and natural as possible.

Good luck!

sign,
I am very sorry to hear this news. I am praying for your sister-in-law for a full recovery.
Similar to Craig's story, -a doctor told me my mother had 3 months to live, after they removed a 'softball sized' tumor from her large intestine, (colon cancer). That was July of '85. -happy to report my mom is in perfect health today. The main thing my mother did during the treatment period was to remove all stress from her life. My mother swears it was stress that led to her cancer, and she works hard to remain cool & stress free.
I learned from that experience the doctors do not know everything & miracles do happen. I am praying for your sister-in-law.
Hang in there,
Matt

I saw something on Discovery just last night, on Nigel's Wild World, or whatever it's called (not the hyperactive Aussie who makes you wanna smack him, but the other guy, English, I think), concerning snake venom--the one in particular was a copperhead--having elements that are successful in treating cancer.
Now that I think about it, I'm not sure it was Discovery; might've been TLC or TNN...problem is, al the cable channels look the same now. In any case, it was definitely Nigel's show.

You mean Croc Hunter? I'd have to say that if I were handling snakes and crocodiles all day, I'd be pretty hyperactive myself!

Sign,

One of my best friends is an executive at the Discovery Channel. I just spoke with her and she can get whatever Discovery or Learning Channel program tape you want. I would be happy to mail it out to you. However, just give me a litte more detail on the program.

I watch all the time, but they have tons of shark shows, as you know. If anyone can give a little more info, I can order it up. Also, if anyone knows of another program with this type of info, I would be happy to get that as well. At the same time, we will be trying to determine which program this is.

BTW, the Internet can pull up tons of cancer related information. There was a documentary about cancer on HBO a while back that provided many useful links (sorry I didn't take them down). I live next to Sloan Kennering in NYC which is a very good cancer hospital and they might have info on their site.

Best of luck!!!

There are two protocols that I know of that are under research that seem to have potential for many types of cancer.

both use a drug called interluken (sp) II or IL-2.
one is under study the NIH in betesda maryland.
They take patients form all over the world, They also pay for almost everything.
The trick is that you have to fit the criteria for their research. and it helps to get refered by your local oncologist. look up the national cancer institute on google. the IL-2 program is headed by a doctor rosenberg I believe. Vaccine treatents are often combined with the IL-2.

The other protocol is in philidelphia, a doctor mastrangelo. he is researching IL-2 w/ another drug gbhc?, I think he is concentrating on malonoma, not sure about gastro-intestinal stuff.

The national cancer institute web pages are very informative. A great place to look for cutting edge new therpy. and trials.

go here

http://www.nci.nih.gov/

look for info (link) on cancer trials
I think this is the direct link.

http://cancertrials.nci.nih.gov/

another good resource is:
http://www.asco.org/people/db/html/m_db.htm

best of luck, act as fast as you can. getting into trials can take some time.

with hope, theo

PS: I dont think the shark stuff is worth a lot of time looking into, not that you shouldn't try anything you feel might work. attitude has a lot to do with health.

I know it's a controversial subject, but scientific studies have shown that prayer appears to have a significant impact on healing illness. It doesn't seem to matter whether the people who pray are religious, which God they pray to, or even whether or not they pray to a God at all. It also doesn't seem to matter if the people know the person being prayed for or even if it's a person or a plant that's being prayed for. There is strong evidence from double blind studies that prayer helps.

There's a little info about this phenomenon at Dr. Weil's site (the site Dan referred to above).

My prayers are with your wife's sister,

Geoff

Sign, just another positive story to keep your hopes up. Three years ago, my Dad was diagnosed with stage III inoperable lung cancer. At his age (mid 70s) the medical establishment is not too keen on going to great ends of treatment. They gave him standard course of chem and radiation, and essentially told us to expect two or three more years. He's now been cancer-free for two years, to the utter astonishment of his oncologist (who told us, in essence, "it's not supposed to work this well.") Now my Dad is not an optimist and not very spiritual. He didn't go organic and learn visualization exercises. He's just a horse, I guess.

Hang in there, and believe that it's possible.

Dear friends

Today is a very great day! My dear sister in law 'Joosje' was with her medic doctor today because a week ago they did a scan on her and guess what, the tumors in her abdomen get smaller and 50% of the tumors in her liver are gone already.

Let me tell you what happened: they have a new medicine ( the E62005 I mentioned earlier) and 200 people are 'guinea pigs' for that medicine. 100 of them get small doses and 100 large doses. Joosje got a large doses because in fact she was a terminal patient.

By the time she started that new medicine her abdomen was attacked with cancer all over the place and her liver had a number of tumors too.

The first day she took the medicine she reacted very strong on it. She was crawling over the floor from pain and we really were very afraid that she would die within a couple of months, maybe weeks.

But she is not only a very nice gal, but she also fights like a lion! And slowly the pain got less and she felt better and looked better.

So last friday she was scanned and we were hoping, you know. And this afternoon she took the phone to tell us the great news! \:\) \:\) \:\)

I want to thank you guys once again for being so positive when this thread started and I'm sure your praying did help a lot and hope you continue praying.

I want to specially thank Harold for being a great friend and brother!!

Peace.

Just read this thread, best wishes to your sister-in-law.

Have an ex girlfriend who had a tumor in her ovary. She is into the hollistic way, went to a chinese Dr. to avoid the knife. The Dr. changed her diet completly, made her cut out cheese (her favorite, she was German) and the tumor went away in a few months. The western Dr. (with the knife) was blown away.

Some things work. There is a guy out here with a radio show who is always raving about selinium.

Very glad your sis-in-law is taking to that approach. Wouldn't it be great if it really was a cure?

Good Luck & God Bless.

I'm a survivor and living with Multiple Myeloma.

One thing to talk to the doctors about is Thalidomide. It was what caused all the deformed babies in the 60's but is working for some types of cancer, primarily the ones that need, and grow new blood supplies as does the cancer your sister inlaw has. Somehow, it inhibits the ability of the cells to create and extend new blood supplies and thereby inhibits the growth of the cancer, as it did inhibiting the growth of blood vessels in the fetuses. The lack of blood vessel generation to new areas of the body, particularly the extemeties, is what actually resulted in the deformities, not the drug itself. Obviously, the one major concern would be that she must NOT BE or BECOME pregnant while on that treatment, if it's allowed.

Also, it wouldn't hurt to look into Zometa.
The drug is specifically for the treatment of patients with multiple myeloma and those with bone metastases from solid tumors, in conjunction with standard antineoplastic therapy.
These solid tumors include prostate cancer, lung cancer, breast cancer and other solid tumor types .

Prayers and Best Wishes....

Hi Han,

That is simply AWESOME news!! I am very happy to hear that the medicine is working to remove the tumours, and very happy to hear that Joosje isn't in so much pain anymore.. \:\) Cathy, my wife sends her congratulations as well; we have been hoping for the best since you posted this thread!

>>I want to specially thank Harold for being a great friend and brother!!<<

I appreciate the thought, brother, but there is no need to thank me - I really didn't do anything.. \:\) Please reserve those thanks for the doctors and researchers who invented the medicine that is saving her life and keeping her out of pain!

Once again, it is great to hear that the medicine is working, that all your spirits are high, and most of all - that Joosje is doing well and getting better.. \:\)

All the very best,

Harold

Wow! That E62005 sounds like a winner!! Do you have any information on how the other patients are doing? How did you learn about this study, and how did Joosje get accepted into it?

God bless you, my friend! My prayers are with you and with your very courageous sister-in-law. I can't even imagine what this has been like for her. Her tenacity is an inspriation! Many people would have given up.
