Surprised you didn't mention Walter Woods in the 'lightweight' section of this article. I owned one of his early amps and he was doing that -way- before anyone else. Dunno what became of him, but he was a true innovator. I believe he told me that he'd got the idea of how to do it from some piece of military gear he'd worked on.

I also owned a Walter Woods back in the '70s — one of my first really high quality bass amps. Great amp! A Walter Woods profile might be an interesting future column.
