Hey guys,

Does anyone have any experience using these adapters to connect one of the newer synths say, a Yamaha MX61 to an iPhone or iPad?

Apple Lightning to USB Camera Adapter
http://www.frys.com/product/7381794?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG

Apple Lightning to Micro USB Adapter
http://www.frys.com/product/7528016?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG

Micro Connectors USB A Female to USB B Male Adapter
http://www.frys.com/product/4529257?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG

Curious which one is the most stable for the price. Any help?

i have an iPad4 and bought the lightning to USB camera adapter. I've been so busy with other stuff, all Ive done is connect a Korg controller to the iPad and played one of the apps to see if it worked. I have a couple of newer keybds that I need to hook up and see what happens. Maybe this week.

Those three items are completely different from each other. Assuming that the MX61 sends MIDI over USB to an iPad/iPhone in the first place, then the first is the one you want, you just pair it with the most common USB cable. The second *might* work if you have a less common micro USB printer cable. I don't know how you were thinking about using the third one, which is an adapter, neither end of which fits either the MX61 or the iPhone.iPad.

I have ordered a cable that looks just the same as the first one of your links. You can find those way cheaper.
If you are not in a hurry wait and I can let you know if it works in a few days when my cable arrives. It was only 5$.

Well, I've done my research on this now.

The USB Micro to Lightning adapter is only for power. It was developed for UK Blackberry/smartphone users that wanted to take their power adapters and use them for their iPhones.

Tried the other two adapters with no luck. It looks like, at least for the Yamahas, there is a proprietary interface for iPhones:

http://usa.yamaha.com/products/music-production/accessories/usb-midi/i-ux1/

That's Yamaha's way of getting another $80 out of us, which I get. For other synth players, I discovered this handy article.

http://www.synthtopia.com/content/2010/11/26/ipad-compatible-midi-devices/

The USB camera adapter is known to work with the keyboards mentioned in the article. I have no idea if the USB B male to USB A female adapter would work.

That's if you want to use the MX's standard MIDI ports instead of its USB port. I think either should work with an Ipad, but the MIDI ports will definitely work. (As I alluded to in the other thread, you do need to make sure your MX is set the way you want... it can send MIDI over the MIDI port or over USB, but not both at the same time, and you have to make sure you have selected the one you want from one of its menus).

If you do end up wanting/needing to use the MIDI jacks instead of the USB jack, you could use that Yamaha device, or similar ones like iRig MIDI, Line6 MIDI Mobilizer 2, or the one from iConnectMIDI.

The USB camera adapter will work with any class-compliant USB keyboard. The only issue about Yamaha is that they're not fully class compliant, but from what I've seen, they usually work with an iPad anyway. Other than that, power permitting, everything generally works, and all the articles about what works or what doesn't are generally just talking about whether or not the iPad supplies enough power. If you are powering the keyboard directly from the wall (which you must do with MX regardless), then power draw is not an issue. (Also, note that that article is almost 3 years old, so the list is not exactly "current", either.)

For what purpose? For anything related to MIDI, it's almost certainly of no use as far as I know. But I don't even know what you're thinking it might do. As I mentioned, if you're talking about the one in your initial post, the connectors on that don't mate with anything at all on the MX, or on the iPad, or on Apple's Camera adapter, so I don't know where it even theoretically comes into the picture.

Well, theoretically, one could go straight from the TO HOST port directly to the iPhone's included USB to Lightning cable without the need for the $30 USB camera kit. It's a $4 solution.

Do you have actual experience linking the USB port on the MX to the Yamaha Mobile Sequencer Software with the USB Camera Adapter? Because I tried it, and it didn't work. Any insight would be helpful.

I suppose if I wanted to use the MIDI ports of the MX, then an iRig and/or similar would work. In fact, I probably should do that, because that is probably the most inexpensive and easy solution.

I thought I wanted to do this through the USB port. Maybe I need to reconsider this decision.

No, the adapter you linked to has MICRO connectors. So it does not connect either to the TO HOST port of your keyboard nor to the iPhone's USB to lightning cable. As I said, neither end of that adapter attaches to any gear you're talking about.

However, if you found that kind of adapter that actually had the right connectors... no, it still wouldn't work. ;-)

I wasn't referring to the micro adapter. Thought I made that clear.

Sorry, just reviving yet another thread today... blush

Did anyone get anywhere with this? I'm trying to connect my ipad to my MX49 using just a USB A-B cable (with the lightning camera connection cable) (into the USB TO HOST port), but can't get it to respond to program changes....Is it possible to do this?

As I mentioned in this thread, the MX series are not class compliant, so this will not work as you want. Sorry.

Boom! Found an ancient usb-midi cable that was lying around and hooked it up, works a charm.

I need to get this to work, and the Yamaha Moblie Music sequencer is on sale for $8 and I bought it.

It's GOT to the the 3rd party 30-pin-to-lightning adapter I'm using...

On a semi-related note, I once tried using the USB jack on the back of my Kronos 73 to simply charge my iPhone 4s.

I plug it in and it starts charging. I turn around and go about my business. When I come back to my rig, the Kronos has crashed with an error message about not recognizing the plugged in USB device.

Luckily this was on set break. Unplug iPhone, reboot Kronos, all is well.

Anyone else got this to work? Kronos is class-compliant, isn't it? But I suppose there's far more to that story that I don't know about.

Class compliance refers to the device (in your case, the iPhone), not the host (in your case, the Kronos).

arghhh, just when it was going so well...

Started putting my program changes into Set List Maker. First few went fine, had two devices set up in the app, Krome on ch. 1 and MX49 on ch. 2 (and set the basic ch. on the mx49 to ch. 2).

In combi mode on the krome, all of those changes work fine, simply MSB=0, LSB=3 (for user bank D), and then PC=x where x is the number of my user combi.

But the MX49 only responded correctly to the first couple of changes. In fact(coincidentally?), only pianos in the first bank (63,0,x). When I tried to put in a string patch (63,3,14), it selected something completely random, or even didn't change at all. I'm completely at a loss to why this is happening. I even tried disconnecting the krome, putting the mx49 basic ch. back to 1, and only trying to change patches on the mx49 but that still didn't work. Maybe i'm missing a trick, or otherwise there's a hardware problem.

N.B. I tested the MX49 with external changes from my RD700NX, which works perfectly.

As also mentioned in that thread, for some reason, the MX does work with an iPad over USB with the Apple CCK, despite not being class compliant. If it's not working, there's some other variable. I have not tried it with iOS 7, I'm still on 6, that could be a factor. I also have an iPad with the 30-pin connector and not lightning, so that's a variable. Or it could be something specific to a user's setup (bad cable/adapter, wrong setting). But many people are using MX/MOX with CCK successfully, as unlikely as it sounds!

Thanks - that gives me hope at least. If anyone has had success using,

Ipad with lightning connector(iOS7)
Camera Connection kit
USB A-B cable
MX49 with latest firmware

And got it to work with any midi app (but especially SLM or Yamaha's own set list organiser) i'd love to know!

I have confirmed that the MX49 works on an iPad Mini with the 30-pin CCK, 30-pin-to-lightning adapter, and standard USB cable if running IOS 6 -- but it does not work on my iPad Mini Retina running IOS 7.0.4 with the same cables. I suspect it's the difference between IOS6 and IOS7 rather than the difference between the non-retina and retina versions of the Mini. (And the MX49 also works fine with the full size non-lightning iPad Retina directly with the CCK.)
