I know this is not a very good shot of the album cover but it is all I have....can you tell me if this is a C.F. Martin D-28? The album was made in 1977.

Do you know what one would go for from that year today?

Or do the modern Martins sound no different??

OR is the guitar pictured an HD-28?

I'm not up on my Martins... anybody else? D-18, maybe?

I have an '87 Alvarez-Yairi DY 39 Anniversary that is basically a copy of a Martin... has that sound due to the bracing and construction. I'm happy with it, and it offers a different/brighter/louder sound than my Gibson J-30 or Simon & Patrick 6. Was cheaper than a Martin, too... especially used from a friend.

I think new Martins are fine... of course they probably don't compare to the priceless vintage specimens, but I'd be afraid to play those.

The D-28 was a popular choice for many acoustic singer/songwriters of that era, so it just might be.

But it IS hard to tell most Martin models from just a photo of the front of the guitar, and a quick glance on their website shows most of them are identical. In looks at least.

That looks like a D 28 or a 35 to me. I have a D 35 and the body size is the same. The D 18 is smaller and the D 45 is huge. If you could see the back of the guitar or if the neck to tell if it was bound, you can tell them apart.

The D-28 has a 2 piece back, and a rosewood fretboard. The D-35 has a 3 piece back and ebony.

If you have a good idea of what that guitar sounds like on the record, why don't you go to Guitar Center and play a bunch of guitars until you find the one that matches it (it might not end up being a Martin).
