Can a 16 Ohm speaker be used with an amp that has an 8 Ohm output?

The simple answer is yes, but we are blessed with Myles and his thread for absolutely reliable advice. His knowledge of amps and circuits is free for the asking, and even though my opinion is a yes, I would still ask him, as there may be more factors to consider.

That's a good idea. I also noticed I did not specify what type of amp. My question should have read:

Can a 16 Ohm speaker be used with a solid state amp that has an 8 Ohm output?

Answer to the above is yes, but with reduced power on SS.

The rule with SS is to use the correct rating *or higher*.

If you used a lower rating ie 4 Ohms, the reduced resistance could push the output over its safe rating & you could damage the amp.
