Probably one of the coolest stepfathers ever, the bald headed drummer from SPIRIT became one just this last Dec. 6.

He lived to the age of 89. Same age as CHARLES DURNING, who passed this week. A year younger than JACK KLUGMAN, who also passed the same day as Durning.

Gonna miss all three.

They all had a good run. There ain't many who last that long, and I live in a retirement community. I am hoping for another 5 years in good health, maybe 10 if I can stretch it. I outlived my fathers run, and now shooting for mommas. He was only 68 when he passed, She was 85, I am 70...

RIP to all those who just passed. All very talented.

RIP. I just checked out some old Spirit music on You Tube, in his honor.

There's a belief that you can guage your mortality by the record of your family. My Dad passed at 64, Mom at 73, HER Mother, my Grandma, at 86, and my brother at 63. I have NO idea where I'm gonna wind up with that kind of range.

Saw this a few days ago, and it really struck home. Been listening to these guys since Fresh Garbage. Spirit was a great band, and Cassidy was a vital part. R.I.P., sir, and thank you.

Seeing them live was a trip. Cassady had a simple four drum kit, and made them sound like more. No Spirit recording reflects any of that. He did a solo that wound up with him slithering on the stage on his knees, "drumming" on the floor. Pretty cool stuff for '68.

RIP Jack. That's too bad.

Somewhere around the late 80's, the band I was in was booked to do a "gig" at the Beverly Hilton with him/Spirit.....for a Milton Berle hosted Emmy Award's or Emmy's After party. The details however are a blur.......partly because the whole thing crumbled on the night, shortly before we were supposed to do part one of the performance. The live band part of the show was pulled. I remember we got there early and did a brief soundcheck and run through....maybe 15 minutes of jamming. I think it had to do with a permit issue or some red tape they did not take care of. It was a FU....put it that way.

The only people I remember were...... the lead singer of the band I was in...Astrid Plane, the bass player Charles Ottavio....both ex-Animotion, EG Daly, the sax player with Pink Floyd and Jack Cassidy. My rough memory of it was that some form of Spirit was there....I don't think Randy was a part of it but I could be wrong. I think we were going to do a couple songs and I think it was then going to be an "All Star" type deal for the ending.

I seem to recall we did the soundcheck for the combined band jam at the end because I walked away disappointed we didn't play because I was really looking forward to our part of it...and the jam too......but remember being chuffed I had "jammed" with the sax player from Floyd and Cassidy.....even if only for a quick rehearsal/sound check. I forget sax players name.......he had a mullet and the long part went all the way down to his butt. Super long.

I have a photo from that night with me, Astrid, EG and sax player dude.

You have to understand the other part of why I don't remember.....I don't need to go into details....needless to say.....it was the 80's man! laugh blush

I do remember this massive wall of TV's......and each TV played a portion of the whole picture......so all might be playing a close up on someone's face but like one TV might just have a portion of the persons eye.....etc etc. I remember wondering how the hell they did that.

The other thing I remember is that while standing there pondering the TV's, Ron Jeremy came up to me and asked me the time. Curious as to why he was there I followed him to his table and it was jam packed with chick porn stars. I found out they show up at these events in an attempt to legitimize their section of the film industry. I recall shaking his hand and thinking how cool I just met Ron Jeremy....and then thinking.......maybe I should go wash my hands!!! sick

That's my story and I am sticking to it.
