Not nearly enough information.

1) Budget?

2) Listening space? (dimensions)

3) Available connections? (1/4" out? RCA? USB? FW?)

In the meantime...I meant to share this article in the other monitor thread, but this is a good place too: Basic monitor information (from Bass Player, of all places).

It wasn't about how much room you have, it was about whether the space was acoustically treated and how it is shaped.

If you're going headphone out from an iPad, most entry-level monitors will do fine for that purpose. You're not going to get terribly accurate response from the D/A converters in an iPad, so throwing a pile of cash at monitors, unless you're planning on making a big investment in a DAW (and room treatments if you're recording in a garage), is a bit of a waste. KRK Rockits should do fine, or Tannoy Reveal 501p's, or M-Audio Studiophile AV40's.

Griff, would it be the Tannoy 501a's (assuming the OP won't have an amp to run the p's)?

In about that same price range as the KRK's and the Tannoy's, I would also look at the Equator D5's ($300/pair) - I have them and like them a lot.

The JBL LSR2325's ($400/pair) are also an option, and they're at Guitar Center/Sam Ash so easier to check out in person.

Good catch on the A/P - been a while since I looked at Tannoy, forgot about the active/passive designation...
