I've been playing this song for years.....fun solo. I've always wondered what synth was used on the recording; seems I recall seeing it in a video but could not identify it. I end up using a whiny Farfisa/synth organ patch with a fair amount of flange.

To the OP: If I had notation software (and more time....) I could help you with this. I didn't find it to be all that difficult. Are you just starting to learn how to play solos by ear? I would recommend first identifying the chords underlying the solo, to provide a guiding structure. You may also want to consider slowing the recording down (if you have the equipment/software). It does move along at a fairly decent clip.

Chords to solo:

|| Em | B | C | D | Em | B | C | C | D ||

Edited by Moonglow (05/17/11 07:48 AM)
Edit Reason: Added chords to solo.

Been years since I saw the video, but I thought it was a Prophet 5? If not, then a CS80. He's a regular Keyboard contributor, he does the "synth sound" column showing you how to get classic sounds from classic tunes.

The MTV video had a SYNergy, but that certainly doesn't have to mean that's what was used on the recording. I've seen live clips using a Vox Continental.

The recording I have is a step up from this. We start with F#m.

Imagine, for a moment, that the Internet doesn't exist... and instead, you've just walked into a room full of musicians... old, young, experienced, green... all just milling about chatting amongst themselves.

You walk in and say "Does anyone know the notes played in the solo for the right hand"... what type of reaction do you expect in that situation?

Something to think about. Welcome to the forum. snax

Yeah, we probably lowered it to to accommodate the vocals.

I've often wanted to say something like that when topics like this come up.

OK, I never realized how hard it is to play an easy right hand solo while looking thorugh the video screen on a blackberry held by your left hand. Needless to say, I kind of simplified a few parts a bit, and the tempo's all over the place because I couldn't tap my foot or else the blacberry would shake. If I played like this at a gig, my band mates would throw water bottles at me and give me the thumbs down, but I think it should serve your purposes:

Is that solo derived from something classical? I can't tell if I'm thinking of something specific, if it's just in that vein, or it's the way Dan played it and I'm remembering/comparing to the original subconsciously (since I'm not recalling the solo in the song at the moment).

The solo was played by paul shaffer. He claimed he based his solo on this song :

It doesn't get anymore 80's than this. Here's the solo (and it's double-tracked towards the end; one hand or two, your choice).

Enjoy:

You do excellent work Mr. BernMeister ! And even more kudos to you for putting it up here for free.

KC members would do well to contact you for charts and transcriptions (for $$) if you're into that type of thing.

Wow, that was a lot of work, considering it was printed in Keyboard Magazine quite recently. :-)

Sorry I didn't see this thread earlier, but BernMeister's transcription does the job and doesn't require searching old issues or the internet. :-)

Took me all of five minutes to transcribe, upload and post. Anyway, I didn't know it was printed in Kbd mag. Oh well.

Transcribing is a large chunk of my business these days, so I get requests for hire all the time. But I enjoy offering up some simple charts from time to time. Just don't expect an entire Emerson solo for free anytime soon smile

Wow, I don't feel so bad about when we play this song anymore.

Did anybody see the "bands reunited" episode on VH1?

I don't mean to sound contrary, but whatever happened to sitting down and figuring out what you're hearing on the original track? With all the technology available to "slow down" fast passages, it makes it even easer than it used to be.

I just think its a little lazy to have someone do that work for you. It's part of being a musician to work out your own parts. Transcription is one of the best ways to learn something! Some of the most difficult solo parts that I've transcribed over the years are the ones that seem to stick with me forever, and I can still recall,

YMMV
