Recently I saw a contract rider that specified that Shure 57s be supplied for a band's horn section & forcefully insisted "NO Sennheiser 421 mics".

Enlighten me to the comparative qualities for reeds & brass, please.

Apparently, that particular band is very happy with Shure 57's and the way they sound on their brass, and not happy with the Senn 421's.

It's horses for courses, IMO, and the reason why it's a good idea for a recordist and/or a sound guy to have a variety of tools in the box, because sometimes "the mic I always use" doesn't necessarily suit the sound a particular ensemble is going for...

I wondered if there were particular "colors" that either mic has that would explain the choice, or a technical reason such as SPL...or if it's just maybe an endorsement specification...
FWIW, the example is from BB King's mid-1990s contracts.

Could be any number of issues. I've never recorded nor ran sound for a horn section, so I really couldn't tell you. I know some singers have specific demands for specific mic choices that don't necessarily line up with SOP (I, as an example, prefer to sing through a 57 as opposed to a 58 or other more standardized vocal dynamics.
