SO yesterday, I traded my Boss Bass chorus and Digitech Bass Compressor for an Ashdown ABM414T cabinet. It had at least two of the speakers robbed out of it and replaced with Bugeras, one of which is totally blown and another is on the way out. I happen to have two 10" bass speakers laying around the house, brand unknown(possibly Eminence and from what I can tell, probably 100 watts each, but they have likely been painted over in black and I can't find markings of any sort on them). The cab itself is birch plywood instead of MDF, and covered with tolex instead of (yuk!) ozite, so I'm pleased with it. I am wondering, however, if the other two that came with the cab are also Bugeras and likely to blow, and because I'm not certain of the results I'm going to get out of a mismatched set of speakers, where I can pick a set of 4 matched 10s and how much it would cost me. Anybody know?

Low cost, 1/2 decent option if you just want 10s that make the right noises: http://www.usspeaker.com/ALPHA10-1.htm

Just sticking any speaker in a box is always a crap shoot. I know, I've done it. Sometimes it works, sometimes it sounds like crap. Try to get the T/S specs for any drivers you're considering and run the specs through WinISD. If you're lucky, you'll only need to shorten or lengthen the port tube(s). Edit: In addition to US Speaker, give a look around http://www.speakerhardware.com/. I've bought from him. Good service and great prices.

Did you ever get your amp fixed so that it won't blow up anymore speakers? The tech didn't find anything wrong with it. I traded it off last weekend at Guitar Center. I got a floor model G-K Backline 600 and about $120 for it. Maybe somebody here can answer me a question about an amp like that. It was rated at 400 watts at 8 ohms. That much output ought to be pinning folks against a wall shouldn't it? Well, that amp was never as loud as you'd expect for that much output. I had to run it as high as I did to be heard over the drums and guitars, and the guitarist on the other side of the stage said I needed to be louder. Now I have heard that a problem PA speakers can have is trying to amplify sub sonic frequencies. I have heard that it robs power from the sub-woofers, and that it can burn up voice coils. So, I started wondering, is there a way a 5 string bass with active electronics through an amp like an SWR SM-500 could be producing subsonic frequencies in sufficient strength to cause the kind of problem I was having? It seems unlikely to me, but it kinda fits the circumstances I was dealing with. Can anybody say yay or nay?

It is possible to put a high-pass filter in your effects loop so that no subsonic frequencies can get to the speaker. One of these would do the job: You can buy them here. I have done this and not heard any difference in the sound; however, I never blew up a speaker with one of these installed. So maybe it worked. I wasn't attacked by elephants either, so maybe it worked for that too.

Anyone who doesn't use high pass filters in PA/SR systems deserves to blow speakers.
Instrument amps and speaker cabs are entirely different critters. Every bass or guitar amp I've ever seen or heard of has high pass filtering built in, if for no other reason than conserving power. GK even makes it switchable for 4 or 5 string basses.

On my 1001RB it's between the "Volume" and "Contour" knobs.
GK calls it "String Bass". Out is "4", depressed is "5".
It changes the cut off frequency for the high pass filter. GK's older designs, such as the 800RB, weren't switchable, but still had a high pass filter that cuts off where the "4" position does on the 1001RB.
MusicMan guitar amps had a similar switch, called a "Deep" switch, back in the 70s. It switched between two different values for one of the coupling capacitors. I've never opened my GK amp, but the "String Bass" button probably does something similar.
I've never seen or owned a head designed for guitar (bass or skinny string) that didn't have a high pass filter (sometimes several) somewhere in its circuitry, even if it's not switable. Most, if not all, also have low pass filters in them to limit the highs.
A lot of the "magic" in vintage tube amps comes from these capacitors having changed value over the years. (They weren't tightly toleranced to begin with.) And lots of techs have made more than a few dollars "back-dating" Fender amps by replacing 5 cent caps with ones of a different value.
