Is this a good deal?

Recommended Posts

I was at GC today, they have a MOTU 24i for 399.00, (list 1195.00). They have one left and I told them to hang onto it until tomorrow; 'I must seek the guidance of my guru's' (uh, that would be you guys) :D -It has 24 analog inputs/16,20 & 24 bit/44.1 or 48K/ with monitoring/mixdown via analog, coax & optical S/PDIF or HP jack. It seems like a good deal, should I get it? Also, they have a 'Blue - Baby Bottle' mic for 499.00 that sounded good (as far as I could tell considering all the noise in there). Its class-A with no IC's. -opinions? Thanks, Matt
In two days, it won't matter.

Sorry Matt, I'm not really the "MOTU Guru" (hey! That rhymes! ;) ) I'd say if it meets your needs (limited digital I/O would be a concern for me, maybe not an issue for you), and (probably most importantly) you like the sound of the converters, it would seem like a good deal to me. The only other thing I'd check is the drivers page over at http://www.motu.com to make sure there's drivers available for it for your OS of choice (like, WIN 2K / XP drivers...) - Sorry, I don'rt remember if you're using mac or pc... As far as the BLUE mics, I've liked what I've heard on the mid - high priced models, and have been less impressed with the less expensive models (Dragonfly comes instantly to mind). It sure LOOKS cool, and I'm looking forward to hearing one, but I have not had the chance to try the Baby out yet. Remember, GC has a 30 day return policy - if it doesnt work out for you, you can always return it for your $$ back. :) Phil O'Keefe Sound Sanctuary Recording Riverside CA http://www.ssrstudio.com pokeefe777@ssrstudio.com

I'll tell you one thing, though. Wholesale on those 24i's is like $900! So, it really is a greta blow out deal. [ 02-04-2002: Message edited by: Duhduh ]

I went back to GC, the new salesguy (a friend) actually talked me out of it. He said, 'the USB 2.0 interfaces coming out will be a whole lot better', so I walked out of there with 2 really heavy-duty boom stands w/casters, big ole counter weights, etc. I'll use those for drum overheads. I may go back after work today to get the 24i, I just can't seem to decide. -It sucks being neurotic. ;) Matt

Seriously though, I highly doubt MOTU would bother with USB 2.0 since: 1) They have already established themselves in the Firewire market. 2) Firewire has much more bandwidth and is a better performer in general than USB 2.0. The MOTU 24i is helluva deal at $400, let alone for $500 like they are advertised this month. PCI cards aren't going away anytime soon for desktops, so I'd say go for it!
