Emerson and Lake touring as a duo:

http://news.type3media.com/2010/02/01/3140

could be interesting - I saw Rick Wakeman on his solo tour and it was great - great playing and a funny guy besides.

I might go check this out but ticket prices seem a bit high (cheapest seats were 100 bucks)but maybe I am out of touch - =

They could get Mike Portnoy on drums and tour as ELP.

Good one. thu

I highly doubt they're going to fill the Nokia Theatre in NYC (2,100 capacity), especially as it's just the two of them.

Yeah, but as far back as the "Welcome Back My Friends.." tour, they didn't get along. Even the dressing room doors for the symphonic tour were, "Emmerson", "Lake", and "Mr. Palmer".

Hey, wait...this doesn't sound right at all.

As far as I can recall, Keith and Carl were good friends, and remained good friends after ELP. Wasn't it Carl who looked after Keith and his surgeries, etc? Wasn't it Keith who "gave" Carl his material for the Works LPs? Wasn't it Greg who always left Keith and Carl alone and went off on his own way, in his own limo, etc? Didn't Keith reluctantly and grudgingly admit that Greg's voice had gotten deeper and more resonant prior to their Emerson, Lake, and Powell tour?

Even Keith's own book, "Pictures of an Exhibitionist" goes into some of this.

I could go on, but your post reminds me of Firesign Theater's "Everything You Know Is Wrong." I suspect if Palmer isn't playing it is most likely because he has other commitments or something, not that he can't get along.

Here's a few pics I took from my last ELP concert (reduced in size for your viewing pleasure). As you can tell, it's been a few years. grin

I'm going to see Steve Hackett instead, as far as I know he's not arguing with anyone in his band. bor

Cooll pics Gryphon!

I'm going to try to catch the Indianapolis show. Waiting for tickets to appear on Ticketmaster. I'd rather see them at the Birchmere as it's a particularly cool place to play. I don't think I could convince the wife it is worth the plane tickets to DC, so we'll take a road trip to Indy and visit a few friends while up that way.

Gryphon,
Cool photos and I think you are on target with your assessment of the ELP personality situation.

Yeah, it looks like he is rather involved with Asia; I believe they are presently recording another album with subsequent plans for a tour. IIRC, wasn't this the same reason “ELP” recruited Cozy Powell back in the 1980's?

I tend to agree with gryphon, everything I've ever read suggests that Carl got along well with everyone. Historically, in terms of interpersonal relations, the problems have largely been between Keith and Greg. I recall a story in Keith's book when after one of their early concerts, Greg did not want to play an encore, despite a wildly-cheering crowd. He eventually and reluctantly agreed to play, but stood at the back of the stage sulking for the entire encore. Afterward, Keith smashed a wine bottle and came after Greg with the jagged edge!

It doesn't seem such animosities remain, as ELP is scheduled to play a one-off concert this July:

That is correct. The original Asia lineup is touring Europe and it conflicts a bit. http://originalasia.com/

I liked the original Asia quite a bit. I think I would rather see them at this point than EL, mainly due to vocals.

Yes, I remember that story from Emo's autobiography. Their relationship was more "professional". However, if you get a chance, check out the DVD Beyond the Beginning. There is a touching interview with Greg Lake where he says he loves E&P like family and that ELP formed most of his life and for that he was grateful.

Joe

Ha! I see that one of Asia's dates is for the UK's "High Voltage Festival".....the same venue as the aforementioned ELP show. I wonder if they will be playing on the same day?

I'll be going to the Nokia show.

I don't care if they pack the place or it's just me and my friends.

I remember seeing Jeff Beck at PNC Arts Center. There was a huge thunderstorm that swept through two to three hours before showtime.

Only a handful of people showed up for that gig. We sat in the front row - because there was nobody there. smile

I stood up and shouted "play Rice Pudding!" - I got the nod and was treated to Rice Pudding! smile

As far as Bickering... who cares, as long as they execute.

This will be an interesting format for Keith and Greg. I'm curious if it will be acoustic guitar and piano...

It's officially an "un-plugged" performance.

http://www.keithemerson.com/TourInfo/2010/20100211-EmersonLakeTourInfo.html

Rock and Roll Legends Keith Emerson and Greg Lake to tour USA in an exclusive intimate evening of musical retrospective highlighting the iconic music of Emerson Lake and Palmer, the Nice and King Crimson.

The two man show with keyboard legend Keith Emerson and the famed voice and guitars of Greg Lake is an intimate "unplugged" prelude to the highly anticipated reunion of Emerson Lake and Palmer at the High Voltage Festival in July, 2010 in the UK. It is unlike any show either of the two have performed before.

The fabric of the show is the iconic music composed by Emerson and Lake throughout their careers and audiences can expect new perspectives as well as new arrangements of classic favorites as Keith and Greg relate the stories of their songs and discuss the compositions and people that influenced the celebrated music the two created with the progressive rock bands that went down in history as the super groups that began a rock and roll era: King Crimson, the Nice, and Emerson Lake and Palmer. The show is completely new – the two have never performed together in this personal setting and audiences will be treated to an emotional perspective and a rare and personal insight into the music they love during an evening they won't forget, in an intimate theatrical setting far different from the theatrics of Emerson Lake and Palmer.

Perhaps they made up. I can only tell you that when I was there in the 70s, they were not talking to each other.

...well, I'm glad they're doing this.

I hope they make some money and that the trio will play together again, and in smaller venues; with electronic instruments.

I've always felt they tried throughout the last few decades to re-create the early-mid '70's, long past when most would listen (except for we Emerson/keyboard sychophants).

I like the concept, and again; hope it leads to bringing the trio back together...

Just bought tickets for the Indianapolis show. (Sending out positive vibes for Keith's hands and the Emerson/Lake working relationship.)
