I had a friend install spb3's in my mim p bass. It worked fine at first. But now when I turn down the volume all the way, it only slightly decreases the volume level. I took it apart to find two wires that needed to be re-soldered. I did that but it did not remedy the problem. I checked Fender's wiring diagram and everything is wired correctly. Anyone got any ideas?

Sounds like one end of your volume pot isn't grounded. Usually one end goes to ground and one to the pickup, and the wiper (middle) goes to your jack. If either of the other two wires came off, it you'd lose all sound. Losing the ground would result in what you describe.

What Dan Duran said. It may even seem alright, but if there is any cold soldering, it won't work properly. Once I had something like this on my Peavey Foundation P/J (And, mind you, right after I installed the Bartolini P/J set!) and when I rolled off the volume on the "P" pickup, it went dim, but never "off". It was that I had a cold soldering on the 3rd leg of the pot (the one I had to the ground). Cleaned the old solder, using the solder hot tip, a little bit of soldering flux on the pot's outer case andthen polished it a bit with a Dremel metal brush tip, and re-soldered it with fresh material. It works smoothly now.

I fixed the problem. The third connector on the volume pot that is bent up and grounded onto the pot was not making a physical connection. Removed the old solder, held the connector in place, and then re-soldered. Thanks for the replies.
