Nights when I love my job

At a club gig last week, a woman who had been sitting behind and to the side of me came and found me after the last set to compliment my playing. I thanked her, and said I appreciated her listening and sticking around till the end. She said she and her husband had actually been planning on staying for just a few minutes, but she was so intrigued by watching my hands and listening to what I was playing on these otherwise simple rock tunes, that she didn't want to leave. Furthermore, she said she had been toying with taking up piano again for a long time, but hadn't done it because she had been battling cancer for the last couple years and felt like there wasn't much point... but seeing me play had completely inspired her and changed her mind, and she was planning to start looking for a piano teacher as soon as she got back home. She thanked me for making a difference in her life, slipped me a twenty, and said, "This isn't a tip for the band, this is for you." And on top of that, not one but two hot chicks took their tops off onstage earlier in the evening. It was a good night on multiple levels.

Honestly, where I play, it's a common enough occurrence that I don't bother reaching for the camera anymore. Still nice when it happens though.

Shame on you (or congrats???) . .

Hey, that's great, the compliments, that is. It's always nice when a stranger compliments you personally, especially when it's more than the usual "you sound good". It's nice that you inspired this woman, hope she knows she also inpsired you too!

From an ethical standpoint, do you share that with the rest of the band? Personally, I have in those situations and would continue to do so.

In addition to playing in a cooking band and getting paid, inspiring someone to learn and enticing others to shake and/or strip are just a few things that provide musos with enough excitement to 'keep it up'. FKS, I certainly understand what you mean about the regularity of damsels undressing on stage. Back in my gig days, they took off their pants and left on their shirts. Sheeesh...I must have been playing in all the WRONG bands all these years!
