Hi
I've just moved to a new place where I can finally set myself up properly. I have been reading this site for a long time (along with the FAQs) but Id love a knowledgeable opinion on where to place the monitors (and desk) in my room, especially since the room is a funny shape.

At the moment I have several foam corner bass traps (1ft triangle wedges) and a bunch of 3" foam wall pieces- its not really enough to do anything effective to the bass .

Right now there is a huge area in the centre of the room where nearly all the bass is cancelled out, with much louder bass nearer the walls. Different bass notes are louder and softer despite being the same volume in a project. Basically its a nightmare to mix in.

My monitors are Focal Twins... probably way too big for the room but thats what I've got. I am only using this room to mix in - no recording acoustic instruments.

Having read the site, I guess the best thing is to place large masses in the corners and absorbers on the walls and ceiling. Hopefully I can do this without losing too much precious space in my room (!). i mix very bass heavy music so Id love to be able to trust what i hear in that range.

Thank you!
R.
I have attached a diagram which should hopefully appear!

You should set up with the speakers at the wall on top of the drawing facing down, so when you're seated the fireplace is in the rear left corner of the room. Then add as many corner bass traps as you can manage, and set your listening position about 38% of the way back from the front wall as shown here:

Thanks Ethan! smile I really appreciate you taking the time to answer.

That is how I had it set up...I havent built the traps yet. I was just worried because at 38% Ive got such a bass cancellation and was finding it near impossible to mix.

If I may ask a point of clarification. With the corner bass traps - do they need to be sealed air tight like the ones explained in "building better bass traps" (I was thinking of building these along the walls/ ceiling too).

I have been doing a lot of research into building these traps...as we cant get Owens Corning products in Australia. When Im looking for rigid fiberglass products is a density of 32kg/m2 ok? (that is the best I've found so far) What is the optimum weight?

That rigid fiberglass is fine, and it's not necessary to seal anything air tight.
