Swear to ya this is true- a few years ago, staying with friends when work was being done on the house, I had our dog (a large Siberian Husky/Chinese Chow mix with a German Shepard/Wolf mix ancestor on one side) in their back yard, on a long chain...
A lot of Coyotes were milling about the area one night, calling to one another and apparently grouping up; I was sitting in a chair near an opened screened doorway to the back deck. Some Coyotes that were nearby exchanged "greetings" with our dog, who made it pretty clear that he would NOT back down. It sounded like one of the coyotes in particular was getting very close, to the point that our dog was facing something in the dark of the field nearby, as I could hear rapid movement through the brush.
I jumped up and ran out the back door with the intention of bringing the dog in before any trouble happened, when suddenly the noise in the brush stopped abruptly, followed by a sharp
"yelp!" and a terrible, familiar smell... then more yelping and whining in the dark, growing more and more distant again, and such other sounds giving the distinct impression of one Coyote being given the brush-off by others...
The aggressive, challenging Coyote had apparently run head-long into a skunk in the dark!
