im not going to be able to afford traps that go from top to bottom of the corners(at least for now), so whats the best placement? in the middle of each corner?, top down, bottom up?

also, i plan to trap 3 of 4 corners, because the 4th has 2 doorways that make the right angle of the corner, so trapping there isnt possible. whats the best thing to do in this case to compensate?

last, my room is 12'8"x25' with my speakers in the far end opposite the untrappable corner. whats the best place to place a trap on the ceiling? toward the speaker end of the room, in the middle of the room, or should i hang 2 in the middle staggered?....or even the back wall? i will have 2 traps to work with since i have 5 and one corner isnt able to be trapped. should i use one trap on the ceiling and one extra else where or should they both go on the ceiling? what to do with the 2 remaining traps.....

thanks, Jim

If you have only one 4-foot high trap for each corner, put it about halfway up from floor to ceiling.

For corners with a door you can put the trap on the wall near the corner, and/or put a trap on the door itself. The photo below is from my company's web site, but the same principle applies to DIY traps.

Ceiling bass traps go in wall-ceiling corners, and ceiling cloud panels go over your mixing console. This article shows where to place ceiling panels:

How to set up a room

Any remaining traps can go in wall-floor corners.

thanks for the feedback, Ethan.

my only remaining question would be about the problem corner. if you use your pic as example the left side i can do because that doorway has a door i can close, but the right side is a opening that leads to a restroom with no door. should i just hang the trap on the door to the left and be done?

your a wealth of information, thanks so much for your service to the community.

An open doorway is like a bass trap, though it depends on what's past the opening. For now I guess you can ignore that corner.

after more reading of the "Doctrine of Ethan" here and on the other forums, plus reading the density report Ethan put together, i decided to make a serious effort at covering all my corners with various trap types, both 2" and 4" in reflective and non-reflective 705 and 703 traps placed in order to help keep the rooms "live" qualities. the push over the edge was Ethans density report, and realizing the benefits of more coverage overall compared to just minimal coverage with the thickest/best traps types.

i hope this is the best decision i could have made given the data Ethan has laid out for us....

well i have been working my butt off and ive made some serious headway. im not done but im closer than not an am hoping that with some pics Ethan and Glen might give me their 2cents on my progress and maybe point out any serious flaws.

Front:

here i had to try to even the hvac thats been finished around but makes this room wrong, and it runs the length of the room

opposite side

here is the rear and the weird doorway surrounded corner i asked Ethan about earlier

and these panels ae now mounted, but i forgot to take a finished pic

so anything obvious wrong so far? thoughts or comments are welcome.

I would like to just give something in return for ethan and some of the guys here for their expert advice. I will leave the acoustic suggestion to the expert here and hope in return i can help out some of the people here so their room can be nicer even with lots of bass trap!

Below is my jazz up color version of your TV area. Basically i did some paint work and took some trap off your Tv area(back area, better check with the expert first!) and suggest to make a dark grey panel for your tv front(sorry for my simple paste on suggestion) or maybe paint your TV cabinet.

Dark grey and medium grey for ceiling(part of it) seem to look well with your current orange color love

Or maybe for the black strip you can get some open cell foam(dark Grey mostly) and stick it onto the existing trap there, u will probably have to do some trying out to get the best effect though. Fogot to mention i did paint a matching white on the wall to line up your trap so they appears more organized.

ok, well thanks but i was more looking for advice on acoustics than interior design, the wife is plenty of input in that department. beside that i happen to like the looks of things so far...sorry you dont.

anyone care to comment on the acoustic treatments?

thanks Ethan. Ive read so much about large untreated spaces(my ceiling) and about the importance of rear wall treatment that I start to second guess myself and my initial thoughts, which were that I have reached the finshline as it does sound terrific. much thanks for all your research and shared info, and for your personal thoughts and tips in my situation. I will forever point folks toward your forum and Real Traps who as me about room tuning in the future.

Much Thanks!
Jimna
