I'm close to moving, so I want to get rid of a bunch of guitars that I'll not need in retirement.

1960 Gibson Melodymaker $1200
1967 Gretsch Tennessean (need work) $1200
1960s Silvertone amp in case $450
1940s Silvertone Model 1300 amp $325
1970s Gibson Les Paul Deluxe goldtop (appraised at $400 to $6000).. $2500.
1970s Fender 25th Anniversary Strat... $2500.00
2000-ish Gibson Les Paul Custom Shop 1957 MurphyPreAged Gold Top... $3600.00
1990s Heartfield/Fender pointy headstock bass...$400.00

Also got a pile of vintage mics and some recording stuff.

First reply from a mobile phone! smile Wish I had the $1200 for the Tennesseean. Would make a great gift for Dad. (He's a huge Chet Atkins fan.)

Uh, Bill...

The appraisal on that LP is a pretty wide spread, don't you think? wink

Wish I had the dosh, tbh. I'd be more interested in the "vintage mics and recording stuff" - but I'm tapped out right now. I'll have to check back and see what's left in February, after I do my taxes....

oops, missed a zero.
I would never have thought that a Deluxe would be worth that much, and I have priced it more according to what it cost me. But apparently it has something to do with first year of complete Nashville, and the grounding scheme, of which I was unaware. (No string grounding, lots of shielding..)

well, as I said, it needs work. I bought it thinking that I'd have time to get it worked on before I had to move, then I'd decide if I'd keep it or something else. But as I don't have time, I'm just going to dump it for a loss and let someone else give it the TLC that it needs.

Others might want to see some, too. I'll have to take some pictures of the strat and melodymaker and bass.

Heres the Silvertone amp in case

I think I'm very interested in the 70s les paul, but i wanted to inquire: which les paul do you personally like more?

My most favorite Les Paul ever was my 1957 gold top, tuneamatic bridge, P-90 pickups. My buddy got it for me when we were students about 1970. I gave it back to him for Christmas many years later, when I was on the road. I was afraid of it being stolen, and I knew that he would make a good home for it. Big, baseball bat neck, warm rich sound, without the mud that humbuckers seem to bring to the table.

Of the two that I have now, the Deluxe is a better sounding instrument, due tot he mini-humbuckers. (funny about those pickups... in a solid cover on a vintage Firebird, everybody wants them. With a different cover on a LP, nobody wants them but studio players... and Pete Townsend.) And it has the slim neck. The 57 reissue has that big baseball bat neck, which was like "coming home" to play, but I still don't care that much for humbuckers, and frankly the pre-aged stuff? I thought that I would like it but I don't. It isn't abuse, but still I treat my instruments better than that. Both are cool.

But I have come to the conclusion that if I were to ever be happy again with a Les Paul, it would be either another 1950s vintage LP with P-90s, or it would be the 'one that got away', a white LP Custom SG-shaped, in all gold with three gold humbuckers and the side to side trem and a big gold tailpiece that I saw in a music store in Pawtucket RI about 1971 and could not raise the $400 to purchase.

Do you have some specifics on what the Gretsch needs? It looks to be playable...

I'm no expert, but it appears to me that the Gretsch needs a neck reset, and a cap for one of the switches. As far as I can tell, it is original (I'm no expert, but I've been around the block a time or two.) There is a 3/4" piece of binding missing from the neck near the highest fret, the rest of the binding is typical for a Gretsch of this vintage... yellowed and cracked, but firmly attached. There is some typical belt buckle rash on the back and basically typical wear and tear for an instrument of this age... I see no signs of abuse. The original hard shell case is worn but functional. Oh, did I mention that this guitar has the original papers with it? Pretty cool.

When I got the guitar back around May or June, I had accepted its problems as normal for a guitar of this age, and I thought that it would be a nice project. But now I'm moving to a house that is in itself a 'nice project'. I didn't think that the move was going to happen for another two years, or I would not have got the Gretsch to begin with. Now I'm not going to have room for it, or time to play with it.

So the price reflects that it needs work, and it should still cost less to buy the guitar from me and have the work done that it would cost of buy another 1967 Gretsch Tennessean. Or you could do the work yourself.
