Back now, sad time, but Maritimers have the gift of turning any event into a party. This was a service for Juanita's dad, who passed in October, but there was a senseless custody battle over the ashes, but they are in the ground now, with the remains of a multitude of other family members.

In this very rural community, some folks were reminiscing about the lost art of preparing wild game. It seems Juanita's grandmother was unparallelled in baked seasoned porcupine, which was the local delicacy, favored by many over the usual moose, venison, rabbit, bear, duck, shad, and sturgeon found in freezers there. Haven't had it myself, but I guess I'd not shy away from a well prepared sample, given the local endorsement.

Also saw my first live moose this trip, a yearling calf I'd guess weighed about 500 lbs.

The boonies are great places to kick back and unhinge....whatever the occasion!

I had some family like that, very steeped in older traditions, hunting, cooking, stuff like that, years ago...

People do fight over the silliest things sometimes.

My condolences Reif, but nice there's some joy to balance the sorrow. I think Applebees has a Porcupine Nuggets special this week. grin
