I have the opportunity to remove some drywall to make this room perform more like a rectangular room. It is still basically at this point construction wise. The drywall that can be mostly removed is directly behind the miter saw. It is 8' wide and comes into the room 6'. I'd leave the R-19 in the wall and cover up the hole with acoustic panels. Also, I could put a fairly sizable bass trap on the other side of this wall against the studs. Behind the wall is my boiler, water softener etc. The area to the right in the picture is the other half of the basement which is filled with plenty of exposed insulation and potential diffusers, aka typical basement junk. The wall behind the camera is just straight across and is where my mains will be.

I did hook up my stereo in the room as you see it (minus the saw and stuff) and obviously it sounded horrible. What I did notice was there was only bass in the corner to the right of the saw, nothing in the corners near the stove. Does that indicate anything?

Anyone think this is worth it? Would leaving the drywall alone and treating that entire wall have an equal effect? It seems to me that I have a good opportunity to accomplish something possibly significant here.

It sounds horrible because it is not treated, not because of the room size. I myself would move forward and focus on treating the room properly.

If that irregularity is in the rear of the room behind you, it's actually a Good Thing because having two lengths breaks up the reflections at low frequencies.

I understand it sounded horrible because it's not treated. Wish I could have seen your facial expressions had you been there to hear it! razz I guess my point was the fact there was bass only in that one corner. It seemed odd to me. I figured I'd hook the stereo up to hear if there was anything extremely odd with the sound due to the room shape before it was carpeted and filled with furniture. There was and that's what made me think I should post this inquiry regarding making the room more regular in shape.

Yes, the irregularity is behind me. Great to know thats a good thing. I'll still put absorbers/traps on most of both of those back walls. need to be careful around the stove though.

Thanks for the help.

Well bass does build up in the corners. That is the reason you put traps there. smile
