Okay, I know this thread has been goinig on for an extremely long time, and someone seems to think I need to be in control?

Anyway, that's not the point here. I just wanted to mention, that I strated to read Keyboard Magazine again. Well, it actually started in May. Anyway, I have since read the June and July issues. What I mean is, I read the articles, and not just the gear reviews, or only things that I found of interest. Of course all those ads did not help either. I find myself, actually reading the magazine. It may also have something to do with the print being a bit better, on the eyses, then I remember.

Point being, is that I am actually reading the magazine, becuse it is filed with some really well written articles. Especially on musicans. The gear reviews are good too, but now I just glance at them. Can't afford new gear anyway. Plus I do not want to scumb to GAS or gear lust. Been down that road already.

Found this in an antique mall. I have never seen recording wire, outside of a book.

I had a variation of that in the studio with my band recently. Upon listening to the playback, we asked, "Wire we recording?"

Yea, it predates magnetic tape. Before magnetic tape came about. People used to use a thin wire and a large machine to record on the wire. It's about 1940-1950. Needless to say, when magnetic tape came about. The wire fadded into oblivion.

It was not very pracitle, as you could not really cut and splice it, the same way as tape. You can even find these wires, and machines to play them on. For sale on Ebay.

"Fadded" into oblivion ?
Is that some sorta really ironic phrasing ?

But seriously, folks, wire recording was the intervening step between direct to disc analog tracking (with the big horn capturing the sound and routing it to the lathe cutter) and the tape technology that followed. Both were magnetically encoded.
It was really big with the Germans (primary developers of recording technology, despite whatever Tom Edison's Mom wants you to believe).

Yea, it was the germans who developed the recording wire, and latter magnetic tape.

They also developed the actual method that most platter turntables used throughout the 20th century.
Thank you Emile Berliner!
Can anyone picture a DJ trying to scratch using a cylinder set-up ?
