Hi Ethan,

I've been doing some tests for a few weeks now in my small room (12'x10') and I've had the opportunity to try several models of speaker ranging in size and price. One thing I've noticed pretty much consistently is a band between 100 and about 300Hz where a great deal of life seems to be sucked out of the frequency response.

My room is what we call in the UK plasterboard (US drywall?) over breeze block (US cinder block?).

Now, my theory: do you think this kind of board over cavity construction could be acting as a kind of panel trap and damping these frequencies? I never had these issues in a previous home that had a similar sized room but with solid walls although it was a different shape,

many thanks again for your time

Tim

Bass traps do not remove bass from the room. In most cases they increase the perceived level of bass. When bass traps are added, peaks are reduced and nulls are raised. In many/most small rooms nulls are the bigger problem. So if you have nulls that make the room sound bass-shy, that is due to the walls reflecting. Plaster and cinder block both reflect bass, so I doubt there's much bass trapping.

Interesting, so I should be looking to effectively trap in the frequency range where nulls appear too to even out the response?

regards

Yes, bass traps reduce peaks and increase nulls.
