This is my first post and I'm trying to figure out if my two 4" panels I made are over kill. My rooms 12.5' by 26.6'. I made the 2-4" panels for my first reflections. I used roxul rockboard 60. Plan on doing some corner traps also in all four corners, adding some ceiling panels to, my thinking was 4" panels all over, plus treat the four corners. Suggestions please would be awesome

If I were to do super chunks in all four corners, 2-4" panels on both side walls, and 3-4" on the ceiling, I sit 12.6 feet from the rear wall so nothing is needed there right?

Yes, 4-inch thick is best for panels, and chunks for corners is very good too. Treat as many of the room's 12 corners as you can manage.

Sitting 12'6" back in a room that length is not a good place because it's very close to the middle. You should come forward a few feet or back. More about that here:

How to set up a room

I'd still treat the rear wall behind you, but maybe save that for last until you see how the sound improves with the rest of the treatment.

Tks ethan, Ya I kinda did the seating wrong but my rear speakers are mounted already. Oops. Maybe I'll change it when I add my 92" inch screen. Otherwise I'd be to far back from the 46". Ok so I'm gonna do all 4" panels, do they need an air gap or flush with the wall ok. One of my main concerns is the panel on the right side had to go horizontaly, because of the sectional, and now the panel is not ear level, that's my first reflection panel, what should I do there? I've been reading and reading and reading about acoustical info, and I'm learning lots and now I wanna get the room the best it can be.

An air gap always helps, but it's not strictly needed at reflection points which is mainly a mid/high frequency issue.

Symmetry is important so whatever is on the left should be matched on the right if possible. A sectional might absorb enough, so maybe you're okay. If you can post a photo that will be useful.

For your back wall I would recommend 6" panels spaced off the wall if possible.

There are photo's there of my setup, so far I have a first reflections on the left side, and one on the right side horizontally because of the sectional couch, seems the best I can do, I'd move the couch to get it symmetrical with the other one, but the wife would kill me...lol. Think that will do?

Another thing I was curious about, should I be doing 24 inch or 34 inch superchunks in the corner.

Glen did you look at my pictures, you really think I need 6" panels on the back wall, if I'm 12.6 feet away?

I was wondering what to do with the window on the front wall behind the speakers and tv, should I be treating it with a heavey curtain?

I really appreciate all your help, Ive been reading lots but your advice means alot. Wife's after me to get this done, I'm rather enjoying the time building and researching, but I'm excited to hear the results

* I'd lower the panel on the right so the bottom is at the top of the couch.

* The wider/larger the bass trap, the better.

* The front wall is not usually a concern. See this:

Front Wall Absorption

Tks ethan. I originally had it lower, wife said could u move it higher, people are gonna hit there heads. I'm gonna move it back down.

For first reflections in a home theater should there be 3 side panels and 3 ceiling panels for the 3 front speakers?

Tks kenny

How many panels are needed depends on how far you are from the speakers. But Yes, reflections from all speakers need to be removed with absorption.

Hi Ethan, just wanted to update my progress and I have just a couple of questions, Got two panels up horizontally for the first reflections, took your advice and lowered them closer to the couch, also got two panels vertically on the other side, one more to go, I'm wondering if it matters how close they are apart, there only 5 inchs apart, but I done the mirror trick and it seems like thats where they should be. Another question is, I did all 4 inch panels so far and Up next is first reflections on the ceiling, should I make them 4 inch to, or would 2 inch be good.

Tks Kenny

Reflection "points" are really an area, so you want a large continuous absorbing surface. A small gap between panels is okay. As for thickness, two inches is enough, but four is better.
