This is a big box with parallel walls -all drywalled, freak
It as about a 3 second decay. The stage is also drywall with and angled ceiling making a very nice speaker box into the room. 30 deep x 40 wide x 10 high in back and 18 in front. No curtains to dampen the sound.
We got an estimate of $20K but that can't happen with 65 members.

Thinking about bass traps in the far corners and panels across the back wall and 1/3 to 1/2 the side walls out from the corner.

We are fairly handy and can build and hang the traps. Was considering 8lb Mineral Wool 2 x 4 x 2" just because of the cost savings over the 703 or 705.

I can possible grabs some measurements but I don't have a zero bias mic.

Recommendations? Guidance?

Thanks,
TEK

Mineral wool is a fine substitute for rigid fiberglass, but I'd make at least half of the panels 4 inches thick. If you can make them all that thick, that's even better. Spread them evenly around the room as best you can.

There's no real need to measure. Just make 40 panels or so and see what happens. I'm pretty sure you'll need a lot more than 40 panels! But it's a start, and once you do that you'll have a better sense of how many more are needed.

Ethan,
Thank you very much for the guidance.

If the sound panels are 2 x 4 x 4" and placed across the BACK corners of the room. Do I need to go from floor to ceiling 20' to the ceilings and also angled across the back wall at ceiling level? The room is about 70' x 80' with a 30' x 40' stage area off the front. Stage has sloped drywall ceiling from 16' at the front down to 10' at the back. All drywall and no stage curtains. (yet)
3.5 second decay in the room. I'm not concerned about sound equipment applications until I get the room tamed down.

In your recommendation you suggested 4" panels. Do I allow 2" air gap behind those panels placed flat against the walls?

Thank you for your help.

Again, the goal in large rooms is to spread the absorption more or less equally around the room if possible. So loading up the rear wall (only) is not the best approach. However, if that's the only wall that can be treated, then cover it as best you can.

An air gap always helps. The theoretically ideal gap is equal to the panel thickness, so if you can give up 8 inches total that's great. An even larger gap can help further, up to maybe a foot, unless that impinges too much.

Was that for build, install and layout or just the panels themselves? It seems pretty high for just panels with a layout.
