I finished building a new computer with my daughter on the weekend. It is a dual core AMD 7750 with 4 gigs of memory. Plenty of memory right? Well everything was going fine until she tried to install a very small program. She got back the message "insufficient memory" Apparently, she picked up a "compression bomb" virus in the short time that she was on the internet.

From doing some reading, we found out that the compression bomb tries to fill up all existing memory and hard drive space.

OUCH! Does that mean a whole new OS install, or can it be fixed? If so, and I know it's after the fact, but get some security software installed immediately. There's a thousand other creeps out there and your system's their meat. Good luck with it Dan.

Best, Paul

rave about the Mac all you want, Unix is just as exposed. Bob Ohlsson was just talking about this the other day. The proprietary Mac OS had so few users that there was little value in writing a virus for them, but Unix is another story, and the Macs have no better safy protection than any other Unix machine.

I don't install anything or surf the web without using Sandboxie.

Never had a single issue since I started using it. No spyware, virus, or any other malware bulls@!t. I highly recommend it. You'll be bulletproof. Bulletproof, I say!

There is no value in writing a virus for anything. I often wonder who is writing viruses. Is it guys just trying to create mischief, or is the companies that sell anti-virus software? I mean if there were no viruses there would be no need for anti-virus software. Are these companies creating markets for themselves?

Depends on what market you're looking at afa Mac users. In business it's all Windows, thus the mass of hackers writing crap to screw them up. In audio and video it's just the opposite, primarily macs. However since the overall market share is a bout 95-5% windows vs Mac, then obviously the hackers will target the biggest market.

Bottom line, no one writes that kind of crap for macs.

My daughter fixed it with some shareware antivirus. I'm trying to get her to use Ubuntu for the internet, but she insists on using only Windows.
