So I took this holiday to get my "studio" all setup.

Firebox running to Cubase Studio 4.5.2 & Mackie MR5s.

After all the setup and selecting ASIOs and all that mess (and some failed attempts and head scratching...I miss Logic) I got it to where everything is working as it should.

Except:

When I'm tracking live instruments (say when I plug my guitar into the Firebox to record direct with an amp emulator) I can't hear what I'm playing in my headphones or the monitors. The input is being received b/c I can see it in the DAW and when I record and play back I can hear it fine and mix and whatever.

I know the Firebox has it's own mixer and it responds with the DAW and I'm looking at everything in Cubase and cannot for the lif of me figure out why I can't hear myself when recording.

Any help?

I don't have any of those specific apps or hardware...but I can tell you to keep looking...it's there somewhere.

I would say it's the mixer in the Firebox...as that's the way it is with my coverters...and that's where you phones are plugged in...right?

It could a single mouse click...but it's there.

does the Firebox have a mixer applet? Usually you'll want to monitor from that, because often the trip through the hardware/computer/OS/software then back OS/computer/hardware to your ear induces unacceptable latency.

Keep looking in the Firebox...it may be a fader....a track/channel assignment...some routing selection...etc....
...but I'm sure it's in the Firebox.

I don't know the Firebox applet. But I do know that a lot of people get confused by the RME TotalMix applet that comes with their cards. In that applet you need to asign the output of each channel to your desired output (in your case, 'phones') and you also have to set the volume of that channel as well as the volume of the phones output. Could it be something like this?

No clue. haha.

I turned my computer on at loaded up Cubase and there I was clear as day.

I'm thinking maybe this...When I monitor it's 0 latency and I hear myself PRE Cubase...so no FX or anything in my monitoring...Well last nite I made the drum track 1st from EZdrummer, which of course is monitored out of Cubase...then I tried to record guitar and heard nothing.

So maybe that had something to do with it? I dunno but it worked today so I'm happy for now.

You need to properly set up the Firebox mixer for monitoring, it does NOT default to it. Launch the Firebox mixer from your applications menu, and it will be pretty obvious what to do.

Everything is working great I figured out all my issues.

Now there's just one more that I didn't expect cos we didn't have this problem when we had our old set up.

I run my Mackies for all the mixing and etc when I'm recording. Well yesterday I went to go to iTunes to do some listening and it wouldn't come out through my computer speakers, it came out thru the Mackies!! Why would my computer sound be routed thru my firebox? I never made a setting change except in Cubase to set my Firebox as the ASIO driver.

PC or Mac?

If Mac, go to system preferences-sound and change your I/O device back to internal speakers.

If PC, can't help ya, but I'm guessing its something similar in the system settings.

it's a PC. and i think i know what you're talking about on the PC side of things...I can find it.

but will i have to do this everytime I open Cubase and then back again? or should one click leave my Mackies for Cubase and my PC speakers for PC sounds?
