I got a new computer with Vista. Pro Tools 7.0 does not work, which tees me off since I got the computer to increase my productivity with Pro Tools. Is there an upgrade I can get? DigiDesign's website is about as helpful as a bucket of mud.

Very clearly stated that to run Vista, you need at least Pro Tools 7.4. Pro Tools 8 was released today, though. It also works on Vista. However, the Digidesign servers are going to be slammed and hard to access today. Are you sure your new computer is compatible? There are plenty of FAQs on the Digidesign website regarding compatibility. Also, Pro Tools will still run better under Windows XP SP2/SP3, as Windows XP uses less system resources overall for basic system usage.

Getz76 is misinformed; you should be angry. Protools is compatible with Vista 32-bit OS; but, NO version of protools is compatible with a Vista 64-bit os. Though Protools functions on Vista 32, your new computer more than likely came with a 64-bit version. Vista 32 is for older coputers that people wish to upgrade and very low-end new computers (the lowest end). This is where Protools may have choked and approaching a fatal end. I also bought a computer hoping to get the best one for the "best" recording software. Once I found out it wasn't compatible with Protools, I took the 64-bit OS computer back hoping to find a 32-bit. There are none they are on the brink of distinction. After an exhausting search, I went and got the computer back, because I didn't want to but a used computer to run a particular software. Unless protools delivers a version for a 64-bit OS, it's run as the industry's standard will come to the end of its track. The announcement that Protools is now compatible with vista is a hoax. The version of Vista that it's compatible with is made for older computer. There are virtually not any computers being made with Vista-32. Try Cubase; it's been prepared for the 64-bit OS.

With extremely limited software compatibility and hardware driver issues, 64 bit may be the wave of the future, but it's a long way from being the industry standard.

You do realize that every CPU currently on the market is 64-bit, and the motherboards drivers are fully compatible with the format? The whole 64-bit peripheral support issue is a tail-chase. Until Windows abandons 32-bit, the peripheral manufacturers won't go 64-bit with their drivers, because they don't see the investment worthwhile enough to bother, because 64-bit will still be perceived to be a niche market.

Wow.
The simple response is that Shac is a moronic troll. Disregard his post. He's not misinformed about 32-bit Windows being a legacy system. As I stated earlier, every new CPU sold by Intel and AMD are 64-bit, and the motherboards and motherboard drivers are all compatible with a 64-bit architecture.
