Dear valued PayPal® Customer,

Due to recent fraudulent transactions, we have issued the following security requirements.

It has come to our attention that 98% of all fraudulent transactions are caused by members using stolen credit cards to purchase or sell non existant items. Thus we require our members to add a Debit/Check card to their billing records as part of our continuing commitment to protect your account and to reduce the instance of fraud on our website. Your Debit/Check card will only be used to identify you. If you could please take 5-10 minutes out of your online experience and renew your records you will not run into any future problems with the PayPal® service. However, failure to confirm your records will result in your account suspension.

We are requesting this information to verify and protect your identity. Federal regulations require all financial institutions to obtain, verify, and record identification from all persons opening new accounts or obtaining ongoing payment services. This is in order to prevent the use of the U.S. banking system in terrorist and other illegal activity. For these reasons, PayPal® will utilize services provided by various credit reporting agencies to verify the information you submit to us.

Once you have updated your account records your pending PayPal® account transactions will not be interrupted and will continue as normal.

To update your billing records please proceed to our secure webform by clicking here.

Thank you for your time,
PayPal® Billing Department.

DO NOT DO IT!!! It's a scam. Contact Pay Pal and forward the email to them.

I had a similar note from paypal to tell me my card was about to expire, which is true, could I update the details.

I figured that was required as well.

I suppose the trick is NEVER USE A LINK ON AN EMAIL. If you apply that rule you will remain quite safe.

Yeah, I've been getting various emails from "Paypal" for a week now -- and I don't even use Paypal.

These crooks are getting a bit smarter, I'll give them credit for that. At least they gave up on the "African Prince" routine.

Anytime you get a notice purporting to be from any company you do business with that is asking for secure info(credit card numbers, bank account numbers, Social Security number, etc) contact the company first, as Davo said, without using their link, and preferably by phone. 9 out of 10 ten times, it will be a scam. If it isn't, then you can give them what they want in a way that can't be picked up by anyone on the internet. If you want to be REALLY security conscious, don't do it on a cell phone either. The signal can be picked up by anyone with the right receiver. I suspect the next move for the cell phone companies will be encrypted signals, if they can get the FBI and NSA to allow it.

I was approached this way several months ago, only one time, and I reported them to spoof@paypal.com. I've never been bothered again. I still get mail from 'princes, banks and estates', but my spam filter picks them out for me and at least they don't go into my in box.

On any of those cases, the best advice is: a) DELETE the mail message inmediately (Or forward it to the scam dept of the aforementioned website), and b) If you wanna be real sure, go to the website (ebay, in this case, although there have been reports of scams such as this from people claiming to be Amazon and other online services), and, if the information is real, it MUST show some kind of ad, banner, alert, PM, letting you know whatever the thing it may be.

And certainly, NEVER attempt to go anywhere by clicking on any link on a mail message.

Delete. eBay and PayPal never ask for that info in that manner. You can also log in and go to your home page and check for messages or annoncments as they would be made there.

Never, never give out that info unless you are 100% possitive where it's going.

ANY email that asks you to follow a link to verify your details is a scam.

ONLY ever sign into websites like Internet banking, eBay and Paypal byt typing in the address manually in your browser window.

Never follow a link.

Even if such an email appears to actually come from paypal.com and not a similar address, don't do it.

It is trivially easy to spoof an address to make it appear as though I'm sending you an email from a valid source.

Dear ,

Thanks for taking an active role by reporting suspicious-looking emails.
The email you forwarded to us is a phishing email, and our security team
is working to disable it.

-------------------------
What is a phishing email?
-------------------------
Phishing emails attempt to steal your identity and will often ask you to
reveal your password or other personal or financial information. PayPal
will never ask for your password over the phone or in an email and will
always address you by your first and last name.

Take our Fight Phishing Challenge at
https://www.paypal.com/fightphishing to learn # things you should know
about phishing. You'll also see what we're doing to help fight fraud
every day.

-------------------------
You've made a difference.

Every email counts. By forwarding a suspicious-looking email to
spoof@paypal.com, you've helped keep yourself and others safe from
identity theft.

If you move your mouse pointer over the link for a second without clicking on it, you'll generally see the name of the website it is really pointing you to and not the one it claims to be.

I get things like this all the time from banks I don't bank with.

Yeah, lately I'm getting stuff from banks I don't bank with, but it turns out now I'm banking with them because the money-hording gerbils that ran my bank are buying fur socks in the Caymans.
