So forever I was trying to get the perfect kick sound to MY ears...deep but not woofy...sharp but not slappy. After many MANY hours of trying, here's the setup that worked best and I think I got great results from a home studio.
The kick in the kit I used was a Groove Percussion 22x18 kick. The mics used were an AKG D112 and a Rode K2. The D112 was placed just outside the sound hole (which was about 3-4 inches away from the rim, facing directly towards the back end of the kick. The K2 was placed about 12 inches away from the kick, dead center, set to a cardiod pattern.
The rest of the setup was pretty minimal. The mics ran into a Firepod. We used Logic for the recordings.
The sound was beautiful. The D112 really picked up the attack without sounding too slappy and the K2 picked up the beautiful bottom end boom. The room we recorded in was hardwood floor (with a rug underneath the kit of course) with vaulted arch ceilings. The floor probably measured about 20x20 feet. It was an absolutely beautiful room to record in, as the reverb was nice and lush without being overly so.
Granted, this music is not what most people here probably dig (metal, prog, jazz), it's more of an indie-rock type of thing, but I think the drums on this song just came out great.
So here's the link. The technique was used on the song Fire and Dust. Hope your ears like it. If you need any more info please email me. Thanks!
