I listened to a couple of her songs, and I kind of liked them.

Sorry, Marissa, I know a hundred, maybe a thousand other singer/songwriters who are at least a good as you. Get in line with the rest of us, work your ass off, stop living off of Daddy's money (just speculation), and learn the value of a dollar.

Art?!? My music is just something to stick in your ear. But have you seen the price of a good "ear job" lately??

I suggest that we put a "meter" on all of our CDs, and charge by the minute. \:D

I'd certainly consider a donation pool to guarantee that she never write another poem...

I think that I shall never read
dreck as noxious as all these

I wonder if she has sold anything? She has the right idea, in a way. You have to sell a lot of CD's at 10-15 bucks to make a living. At the prices she is charging, she is taking into account the low number of sales she'd probably get at any price. I think she figures its about patronizing the arts. I wish her well, but I doubt she'll make any sales at that price.

I actually donated money to her, clicking on the link on the bottom of the page.

I think I know that woman. Whatever...., the price of anything is whatever.......the market will bear. I've got a 1985 Volvo 240 DL, which is THE classic Volvo that I'll sell you right now for........$25,000, negotiable. I compounded the hood and cleaned it up real good. Let me know if you're interested.

At least she has the guts to try something different. She won't succeed IMO, but I gotta give her credit for audacity.

Extra credit for lunacy. :p

Jean Michel Jarre did a limited pressing for a charity once. I think it was $1000 per LP. The promise was that these songs would not appear on any other records ever.

Can't you smell the spam frying? LindseyR (who, coincidentally hails from NYC just as "Marissa" does) signs on and her first post is this? No "hi, new member here, I'd like to introduce myself...", just "go look at my... er, uh, I mean this crazy woman's web site".

"...why she is so different than the rest of us." Us? Waddya got a mouse in your pocket?

probably right Alan. Trolling for suckers?

I got one of those Nigerian e-mails today. I sent the guy back a note saying I was in, but the split wasn't good, he had to give me 60 percent. Haven't heard back from him yet.

Who ever made that fucking "how to ruthlessly promote yourself in the music buisness" book should be shot.

Ok, there is nothing really wrong with promoting yourself, i guess, but god, play in time and write some even marginally interseting lyrics lady.

Ya know, though...her marketing ploy works. You know why? Because, she realizes no one's gonna buy a CD at those prices (except her rich Aunt Agnes). But...how do you make someone listen to your stuff? Say "My stuff is great...listen" or "I'm selling CDs for 100 bucks and they're worth it".

Do the psychology. EVERYONE HERE listened to her stuff. Everyone was morbidly curious as to whether some mystic siren had the power to give us a sonic "eargasm" worth 100 bucks with her voice and musical prowess. So, whether or not you thought it was worth 100 smackers, you listened, and perhaps when, in another month or two she starts offering her music for a more reasonable price, we'll have heard it.

Hey! Marissa!

SO you woke up one day and said, "I'm going to be rich, YEAH! I have an idea I will sell my CD's for $100.00 I'll be rich in one month"

"I'll promote myself on all the forums I can find on the net, all this people are morons that will buy anything anybody throw a them" right??

Please!

Kinda reminds me of that Jack In the Box commercial where this kid was a 'taste tester' and he charged a huge fee.

They asked him how many orders he had, and his reply was "I only need one"...

It is actually psychology that she is pulling on us. If her CD has a SRP of $100 then she sells it for $20 "on sale" people will be storming the record stores to get it.

Hmmm.
$300 for the whole set?
Man, Jimmy Page should raise the price on Zeps boxset, he's losing his shirt!

I'm looking at her like I would a really expensive piece of.... gear.
Can't afford it, so I won't read the review. :p

Nice marketing gimmick she came up with. She will probably not sell any of her music at $100 a CD, but she created a buzz about her music that has people going to her site to listen. Pretty clever idea.

On her site, she says:

Quote:
Where are the scientists? Why are people giving all their money to pop culture, when the amphibians are mutating and they are being born deformed. We very serious environmental problems. What do we do? We go give our money to a bunch of nobodies...
With this in mind, then, wouldn't it be better for all of us here to send contributions to the science folk - as apposed to spending $100 on a freakin' CD?

With a $100 price tag, she shuts out a lot of the people who might actually give a damn.

this girl is not very smart. Her gig section is just a giant unorganized rant. One of the funniest quotes she has at the end is:

"Meanwhile, why don't people respect nature? If they can't respect nature, how are they going to respect real talent?"

the funniest moment though is her conclusion that people watch tv because they can't handle relationships...

"I am also suprised that people buy all this "so called" entertainment. Why can't they entertain themselves and interact with others? All this impersonal spying and voyerismic obsession is a sign that people can't cope with relationships. They are not strong enough to love other people? They are shallow"

I agree with what she has to say about music and how what the record industry has passed as "art" has cheapened the overall music we all make. Sad and true.

This is the reason I no longer play my music to someone who asks unless I know they understand what I`m all about. I give CDs to people when they ask about my music. This way it saves them from saying, "This is great." when they might not mean it and it also saves me the scrutiny of sitting there waiting for them to say, "This is great"

Anyway, where was I going with that?....

Peace,
Ernest

You guys see this pic at her site yet?

http://marissamarchant.com/slide_show.html?show=Slide_Show&picture=picture16.jpg

Huh. What she's wearing must be some sort of *statement*. I think she's saying: "My grandmother died & left me her gardening clothes."
Or maybe: "I'm 35, live with my mother and we enjoy shopping at Wal Mart when my kids are with their drunken, asshole father."

Those shoes look a bit small for her. Perhaps another *statement*?

Just some observations, of course.

:p thanks for your input.
I like what she says on her gig section. I am not joking.
From listening to songs like For you, and Green Tea it appears that she puts alot of work into her music and wants respect. Do you think that musicians are getting the respect they deserve?
I don't hear people as good as this on the radio.
Maybe she is a snob, but she has a point.
Do I respect art? or my just money?? Go question everyone. Do you respect name brand artists because they are rich? Most people do., and for no other reason.
She probably makes some people feel bad, but then this Maxfield Parrish dude puts most artists to shame. Did he sell his prints for ten bucks. Maxfield Parrish is on her gig section. \:D

I think what it is, is that they lump all these musicians in the same box, and sell all the music at basically the same very low price. But who sings like this and writes music on both guitar and piano like this? No one.
No one that I know.
She is better then all the people that are signed.
I gave her a donation.
She might be a snob and think that she is great., but then shouldn't artists have self esteem, or should they walk around with their heads down and look like something the cat dragged in? I thought about this last evening, I don't think that she is crazy.
I think that the world of commericalism is crazy. :p Listen to Green Tea, and then listen to nevermind and El Sol Que tu Eres,
No one is as good as this who is signed. They sign junk.
That is why they sell it at such a low price.
Her voice is obviously better then paula cole, alanis, sarah, tori, kate bush, norah jones etc..
She has much more quality and depth to her writing. They can't play numbers of instruments and sing like this. I wonder what else she can do. Some people are sleeping? I am not one of them.

LindseyR (aka Marissa):
Well, one person who comes to mind immediately as a singer/songwriter who plays piano and guitar better than you, has a much better voice, and is an infinitely better songwriter would be Sarah McLachlan...check out her stuff sometime.
But keep at it...I admire your marketing saavy, if not your musical/poetic talents.
Later,
kc

This is my last post on the subject. Some people gourmet food. Some people like burger king.
Major Labels are Burger King specials in high priced studios and they rely on all kinds of things to cover up their lack of talent.
Most people love Burger King and the majors know that.

My bottom line...Lind...er, Marissa's stuff is nice. I see no need to slam her, nor do I see a need to pay 100 bucks for her CD. There are a lot of CDs that I need for considerably less.

But, more power to her.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I've got to send a check to this General Ndogo Mbubwe in Nigeria...he says he's got a lot of money for me.

I was grilling a steak last night out on the veranda, and this cicada hit my buddies arm and freaked the shite out of him. The bug then started buzzing along the floor towards him and he was jumping up and down like a school girl trying to get away.

I spent $7 on the t-bone. The way I see it, I could eat 14.2857 t-bones for $100.

I didn't think about Marissa at all last night.
What am I doing in this thread?

I didn't think about Marissa Last evening either. I was with my girlfriend. what is your point?
I wasn't even on this board or on the computer.
Some people do nothing on this planet except leave their trash behind. Not everyone is leaving something beautiful.
Most people love trash.
..burgur king and cheap thrills.
Haven't you noticed how crappy everything is getting in this country.
Everything is crap and made of crap.
Im sick of it too.
Anyway now, I am spending time with my son, and I am thinking about music.
But I love music and art, and without it, the world is ugly.
I am sick of the commerical world spreading their ugliness across the world. I guess ugly people like ugliness. bye. :p

I love it!!

You all try to bust her balls but most of you visited her site and even listned to her music. Good on you girl.
I manage to resist the temptation to click on any link on on this thread \:D

However, I do feel the same - if I get people to hear our music they will buy it.

On the other hand... I guess we all think our music deserves to be sold at a better price.

Wake up and smell the coffee.

You can NOT set prices. This is an open market. It depends on a whole universe. It's not "I am better than Prince, so I have to ask for more money on each CD".

Of course, you can, I can, ask for a million bucks to get a copy of our music. That's how luxury articles are sold... but then you have to wait to find someone to actually think your music is worth the price. Believe me, you will not get rich, specially with this attitude.

BTW... talking about Ugliness... your legs, lady, are ugly. :p ... sorry, I meant, your friend's legs...

I think that no one has any standards about anything.
Art is very cheap and often disgusting garbage.
I don't give my money to them.
I don't know if you noticed how dumb the american public is getting?
I have. I agree with her 99 percent.

Well I came back for a little while. I am a lover of phenomenal vocals.
I listen to everything.
I listen to music from all over the world.
I listen to some oldies too.
I am impressed with people who have phenomenal vocal mainly.
full bands are great. but if someone can sound great alone that means they have serious talent.
These people need so much behind them to impress people.
I look for lush beauty.
When I listen to music, I look for a fantastic voice. Sometimes I will look for a fantastic instrumentalist.
but the human voice can be very moving.
None of the singers they are promoting has lush beauty.
None of them.
Streisand, Vaughn, Rondstandt sometimes,
these singers had lush rich and gorgeous voices.
Marissa is a rare find.
None of these women right now, or in the last twenty years have a voice this good.
Where are the great singers?
these singers sound like nothing special.
the most impressive thing about musicians is their special quality.
I am not impressed with the garbage singers of today.
they don't have beauty in their voices.
Yes, she is pretty too, but that isn't what I was looking at. My girlfriend is my true love, not Marissa. I love guitarists, unusual instrumentalist from across the globe, but vocals are something that really moves me. Especially the female voice.

This Lindsey chick has some balls to keep posting even after she's been exposed as being the so called 'artist' Marissa. She looks like a fool, albeit a fool with balls. Keep up the fine work Marissa/Lindsey - you're surely on your way to becoming a superstar.

Ok...I listened to a few (apparently only a few of the links are real, and the rest generate 404 errors).

Nice voice, nothing that special. Bum notes? Oh yeah. Check out "Green Tea" - granted, it's supposedly a demo, but it's kinda 'all over the place' IMHO.

"El Sol Que tu Eres" is nice, but whover mixed it should get a real job - her vocal is mixed WAY up, drowning out the solo guitar & the male harmony. How hard is it to fuck up a song with 3 parts?

I don't know how we made the jump to Lindsay being Marissa herself, but if she is then let me offer a bit of advice:

Change the name of the Gigs page until you actually have one. If I want to see you play, I don't want to read a long rant about why you don't. Put your opinions of the biz on a page so labeled, so folks have an idea of what they're getting.

Don't enable links to files that don't exist - it's annoying, and it makes you look like an amateur web designer. (If someone is doing this for you, perhaps they are an amateur? Tell them to fix it.)

Since you moved away from NY, try taking the "New York City" off of the pages. Nobody outside of New York really cares if you're a New Yorker - and since you're not at the moment, try telling people where you live.

If you want to reach people, don't call them stupid. Even if they are, no one wants to think so.

If you are Lindsey, stop trolling under another name and be real. You might get somewhere with people if you're honest.

Also - I know you're self-taught, but that doesn't mean you can't study the art of proper vibrato. Sometimes you sound like you are singing through a Leslie cabinet.

That's all for now.

That was my point...although I didn't try to bust her bal...uh, ovaries (that I know of). I mentioned that regardless of whatever anyone thought of a 100 dollar CD...everyone listened to it. It's a hilariously effective way of getting someone to listen. I think her stuff is nice.

I also think Nanette Malher is phenomenal. If you like that type of stuff, go to her site and download "The Timber Cries".

http://www.nanettemalher.com

I listened to that song quite by accident and bought the CD immediately. And no, I don't know Nanette. She sent me a nice email thanking me for buying her CD, though.

Party on, Lindsarissa! \:D

Now Tedster, I went and listened to Nanette's tune because of it's name. The name of the first song that my team is doing is "Howl's at the Moon" which makes reference throughout the song to a Timber Wolf. I had to check this tune out for obvious reasons.

Nanette did a nice job, very pretty voice and well delivered performance all around. However, throughout listening to the song, I couldn't help but think about your thread about "TREES" just recently. \:D CUT 'EM ALL DOWN!!! You didn't happen to run across this song while finding Green Peace over your obnoxious neighbor cutting the Sweet Gum did you?

Tedster, you made the Listener's Quotes page on Nanette's website. Way to go. A very nice review.

I've heard her stuff & do like it, especially The Timber Cries. It gets played out here on one of the Public Radio Stations shows on Saturday mornings.
If you haven't yet, look at the Mercy video. Very nice work.

Lindsey...I think you must be a friend of hers or you have shit for ears..I just listened to Green Tea and Can't bring myself to listen to any more...First off, her piano playing is horrible and there are severe time shifting issues. The voice and piano together sound disconnected...Her singing is really really bad...TOO operatic on the vibrato and ZERO diction...Can't make out a word she sings..She is slurring all over the place..Sure, she is on key though..I'll give that..The song is disjointed and amateurish........This is a demo and i'm sure the sound is messed up and to be fair, i listed to some other tunes and they don't sound as bad.. \:\)

I usually get a $1,000,000.00, and a big bag of crack for a job like that. The 1.5 mil is for the CD alone, the re-mix is extra. Just want to make that clear.

I am mainly an artist. I deal mostly in the fine arts.
I understand what she is saying. I play music and make cds of no value. but I am a talented artist. I don't think that anyone here would be interested so I am not going to show my work. I believe that all artists are being pressured to become commerical garbage. Artists are becoming lazy because they feel that no one cares.
A small group of people value high art.
Some artists develop themselves, others don't.
I respect artists who really care about the quality of their work.
People should support this level of art.

Can I record some bowel movements , burn to CD, and sell? That's art isn't it

This chick is playin us all, cause most of us went to the site. Self important pseudo talent such as Marissa/Lindsey makes me laugh.

Hey, Lindsey. My band has sold approximately 20,000 copies of our 3 CDs. It cost us about a buck to make em, and we sell em for about 9 or 10 bucks. We're laughing all the way to the bank. We have played across the country, both coasts. WHAT HAVE YOU DONE, besides post some poetry that could have been written by a c- literature major at a community college, and babble about how much 'garbage' is out in the industry. Guess what. Some of the people who made this music are proud of it. Unless you've listened to EVERY release by EVERY band this year, I don't think that you can really say its all garbage.

When you actually get some gigs, or a clue, or both, you can judge the rest of us who work damn hard at what we do.

Your music is not Filet Mignon. More like Carls Jr or Jack in the Box.... I got your burger king right here

Yuhuh. Regardless of wether or not what she does can be called "art", A large group of people can't afford $100 per disk. People have bills to pay, families to feed.

I sell my CDs for $10.00 a piece. If can can make a profit of $5.00 off of each CD I sell, I'm happy. Do I think this devalues my music? Nope. I've given quite a few CDs away. Does this make my music worthless? Not at all. It's not about money. Never really has been.

At some point, I'd like to make a living exclusively through writing and performing music. Why alienate potential fans by slapping some exorbitant price tag on what I do?

Self-esteem is one thing. Outright lunacy is quite another.

No, actually, I think I found it before the whole neighborhood debacle with trees started. And, actually, in her bio, it says she wrote the song after hearing of the death of one of her friends' boyfriends, who happened to be a lumberjack. Or something like that. Actually, the whole song just hit me, actually, it hit me really hard, in a good and necessary way...because I happened to be going through some grief at the time. I kinda bonded with the tune.

Dak, yeah, I saw that. I can't tell you how honored I am to think that she used my quote on her website.

Marissa Marchant's Futures Market Plan Condemned
Mon Jul 28,11:16 PM ET

By KEN SHANANIGAN, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - Pop-Deva Marissa Marchant is setting up a stock-market style system in which investors would bet on world-shaking events, such as when, if ever, her next three CDs will be released. Supporters hope to gain intelligent and talented, "gourmet-style" music while investors who guessed right would win profits.

Two Democratic Senators demanded Monday the project be stopped before investors begin registering this week. "The idea of a betting parlor on such atrocities is ridiculous and it's grotesque," Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., said.

The FCC office overseeing the program, called the Policy Analysis Market, said it was part of a research effort "to investigate the broadest possible set of new ways to prevent musicians topping the charts who "can't play numbers of instruments and sing like this."

The market would work this way. Investors would buy and sell futures contracts essentially a series of predictions about what they believe might happen with the yet-released Marissa Marchant CDs. Holders of a futures contract that came true would collect well-crafted music as well as the proceeds of investors who put money into the market but predicted wrong.

A graphic on the market's Web page showed hypothetical futures contracts in which investors could trade on the likelihood that Marchant would shoot for the pre-Christmas release market, release a monster triple-LP in the Spring, or take time off her grueling recording and tour schedule to enjoy family life with her child and girlfriend, also a local amateur musician.

Although the Web site described the Policy Analysis Market as "a market in the future of music," the graphic also included the possibility of a North Korea missile attack "pre-empting the project."

That graphic was apparently removed from the Web site hours after the news conference in which Wyden and fellow Democratic Sen. Byron Dorgan (news, bio, voting record) of North Dakota criticizing the market.

Dorgan described it as useless, offensive and "unbelievably stupid."

"Can you imagine if another country set up a betting parlor so that people could go in ... and bet on the assassination of Simon Cowell or the overthrow of BMG?" he said.

Is there any men here who are as smart as marissa? besides myself?
I doubt it. Marissa will probably be rich someday.
If you are as gifted as Marissa, can you post your music now..and let me hear your vocals, your multi strumental abilities and everything..just curious? I doubt that any of you are real artists.
Or are you convinced that Mc.donolds music is cool if it is sold at ten bucks?

Read a couple of lines above, There is & we is all smarter & better looking, and the women too.
I doubt it. Marissa will probably be rich someday.

Probably not. Let's see, you, her mother, and father, if he can be found, & the other girl friend @$300.00 a pop for the set is $1200.00. That's hardly rich.
If you are as gifted as Marissa, can you post your music now..and let me hear your vocals, your multi strumental abilities and everything..just curious? I doubt that any of you are real artists.

There are music posts, both on this forum and the guitar forum as well some other, individual posts scattered about. Check them out if you're bright enough to locate them.
Or are you convinced that Mc.donolds music is cool if it is sold at ten bucks?

Uh, you got me there, who's Mc.donold?

Troll.

You know that fact that some people here feel that someone as unusually talented as Marissa has to post everywhere on the net for herself, is kind of sad. I am sure she posts for herself. but this time, I am posting because I think that Musicians who are real artists need to up their level of musicianship, and they need more challenges then what the music industry is giving them.
I agree with Marissa. These people are not that talented. They are not high level. Only very educated people would realize that.
They have limited music skills and very limited quality. the world of art is underground.
and any extremely developed and hardworking artist would not sell their music at mc.donolds prices. Maxfield Parrish wouldn't sell a print for 10 bucks, so why should a great musician. the fact is...no one that is on a major label is that high level., especially right now. It is propaganda. The serious level talents are being brushed aside...especially right now. There weren't many high level talents that were ever signed. I don't think that anyone is that talented right now..at all. they put me to sleep. all of them. :p

I admit that I know Marissa. and I know what she capable of. please listen to Green Tea demo..her piano playing and guitar playing and singing ability. They never signed anyone as talented as her. They are propaganda. People who never signed anyone who is really really high level at many things..like she is. I know what she is capable of.

I think that you should humble Marissa if that is that case and all write her management, at freakvox@yahoo.com ...please send her names of people who are as talented as she is vocally, instrumentally and compositionally.
She should hear people who play better piano and sing at the same time..
here is her clip of the demo green tea...

http://www.marissamarchant.com/gt.mp3

if their are so many others as developed and as talented..please give her names..
I am sure she would love to here about it. I don't know anyone who was ever signed as versitile. tori amos, paula cole..fiona, alanis, carol king, all of these people have no diversity..nothing great about their voices..and they can't play more then one instrument that well..
tori use samples..
This woman is the most high level singer/songwriter I know about..if you know of others..please send them to Marissa asap. humble her.

(If Mar- ehr, 'scuse me- LINDSEY- (egh-hemn) can double-poste, (pinky held high aloft as typing) thenne- sew-canne-eye!)

Well, I did check out the linked-'site, I can't make any kind of judgement-call here if I hadn't...

Well, then, Lindse- ehr, 'scuse me again- Marissa has been busy, but not busy enough. The haphazard 'site with dud links, etc. is one thing; but, girl, get off your supposedly gold-plated ass and learn how to sing! You've got some potential, some- not exactly ground-shaking, but you can almost carry a tune- but, for real, your phrasing, vibrato, and sense of pitch are wavering and wanting here, there, and everywhere. You sorely lack rhythmic diction and cadence. And windy braggadocio is not the same as confidence; a donkey will bray defiantly, even when scared to the point of soiling his stall.

With a lot more fire in your delivery I could excuse these and consider you rustic and marked with character, but, we both know that there is not enough of a fireplace or a cabin in your sky to play that card. Weak stuff indeed, at least that what would actually be there behind the links...

And, as I said that you can almost carry a tune, it would benefit you greatly to choose a tune that could carry you. I highly recommend some Kate Bush covers, or perhaps Squeeze; or the hiring of a professional, talented songwriter, post-haste.

Poetry... what poetry... I mean, WHAT poetry, where? That leaden rhyming that you've deposited on your 'site is torment to peruse, laughable if it didn't hurt when I read... how can you take yourself seriously as an alleged "poet" with drivel like that leaving tracks on your lips, and our eyes?!? Or is this a "virtual refridgerator door" from mom's kitchen?

Or... are you really, actually in truth... Andy Kaufman playing a self-amusing prank on us while you sing along with Howdy and Buffalo Bob and Claribel in your underwear, still at it after faking your death and thus cheating it?!? Am I on to you?

She recording all her stuff, and it is like I have never heard anything like it. she writes all kinds of music.
and it is all very complicated. not all the time..but it is extremely mouth dropping.
this is just a small amount of what she can do. But she needs to know of some people who are just as talented. It would humble her. She may not think that she nees humbling. I do.
please write them, freakvox@yahoo.com

please send her anyone who is better then her.
I have never heard anyone. don't send it to me or post it..I don't have time to read your stuff. Just drop them message, her manager eres will listen and let her know about someone that talented.

I gotta admit, guys & gals, this is one of the funniest troll/spammers I've seen in a long time. In fact, it's almost too good to be true - I think somebody's been yankin' our collective chain. but you've got to admit, they're good at it !! \:D ;\)

And everybody think I'm crazy. \:\)

This is bizarre. Ever met somebody that couldn't get your drift? That special someone that won't go away, no matter how mean you get?

This could go on for days. You know what would be real funny? Let's steer whats-her/his-name into one of the political threads. That would almost be as funny as wewus and the Armanians. \:D

Ay no mames !!

I decided to follow this asshole's suggestions and spent precious internet time to download this shitty piece of music.

Actually, it makes sense now:
ALL THIS IS A FUCKING JOKE.

The girl sings in a so pathetic way I really found myself laughing after I realized it was a joke.

Good one !

My friend, you should really start to listen real world music. Marissa sucks big time and you should know the difference between real talent and just your favorite's piece of ass singing and torturing other people's ears.

Lindsey, what I'd really like to know is, why $100 USD for a cd? What in her mind justifies that we have to pay $100 for a CD? I tell ya, there are more deserving folks that could ask for $100, but don't. The person who runs Home of the Underdogs certainly could use it but doesn't. Now that's a great example of a person who puts in a lot of time for a hobby she loves, and yet asks for very little in return. (Actually, she could use about $500 a month just for server storage and bandwidth alone.)

Luckily, enough people donate, buy stuff from the online store, and click on the many popup ads that appear on the site.

Can't she just go to work like the rest of us working stiffs/college students/HS students? If she does so, I guess you ought to tell her that asking for $100 is a bit much. At her level, her own money from other work should fund most of her projects. If people really do like it, then the good offers will come, but she should have to struggle for it just like the rest of us. Okay?

OKAY 2 questions for lindsay

1) who do you think you are talking to here, .. do you realise who your audiance is in this forum?

2) what are you trying to accomplish here, want to you get out of this comunity.

2a) are you a guy or girl?

This is perhaps the most ridiculous thread yet and there have been plenty. Lindsay is correct when she comments about society loving trash, just look around this forum and peoples responses.

We probably can all agree Sarah MacLachlan is an incredible talent. However, (like everything else), art is in the eyes of the beholder so all arguments mean shit. So why the mud flinging? Even if this is Spam. Why the anger? the disrespect? the name calling?

I also think that its interesting how so many of us "artists" are so involved with this thread. It occurs to me that an artist would have much more important things to do than contribute to such a "discussion". Anyway, I`m out of here.

Wish you all the best.

Peace,
Ernest

But c'mon, Ernest. $100 for a CD from an artist I've never heard of? Simply ridiculous. Yeah, the name calling and the angry remarks are a bit much, but most of the comments are warranted IMHO.

As for doubts that some of us spend more time here , hmm... well, as for myself, I still play my basses 3-4 times a week, along with some guitar action. And why am I up so late? Mostly reading through posts about the new, upcoming 2.6 kernel in Linux. If you didn't understand that last sentence, that's okay. That's just one of the small steps I'm taking for my eventual day gig as a programmer/tech writer/blablablabla...

OK, I am not going to her site, however ... I will answer to the question about the $100 per CD price.
Think about it ... she only has to sell one CD to most folks 10.
This really is a marketing strategy that *could* work. Great artist (painters) know this strategy. If you price your work higher ... the percieved value escalates.

Why the anger, disrespect, name calling?

This twit barged in and loudly crowned herself to be a genius and made rediculous claims, all through a shoddy subterfuge, pretending to be "LindseyM". And that drivel that she refers to as poetry? Calling out alleged fakirs like Kate Bush as undeserving of success and inferior to Her Travesty? Phwah! B.S.!

Mud flinging? She brought all the mud needed herself, and was rollin' innit to begin with.

If she didn't behave like a neurotic @$$, and was friendly herself, I could concede that maybe she could get somewhere, with time, training, hard work, enough humility to have an honest perspective, and a lot of luck. But the most honest position to take would be to tell her to give it up and stop wasting her, and everyone else's, time.

Damnitt, ernest828, I came back to this stinky thread to see what my man tazzola had posted, but your post got me irked enough to break my promise not to post here anymore!

Forgive me, everybody... let's, uh, go listen to Kind of Blue or spray Caig into our faders or somethin'...

Ernest, you're one of the kings of anger, disrespect and name-calling around here. Remember the thread in which you called Tedster a "loser" a few weeks ago, for no good reason? And recently you accused our esteemed moderator of posting "bullshit." Twice.

Are you trying to break the record for hypocrisy, or what??? \:D :p ;\)

Yes, she does think highly of herself. She sounds like a frustrated artist to me. Someone who has tried via conventional means to get noticed with no success. So now she's going in a new direction and probably obsessing too much. But being obsessive is often part of what it is to be creative. It's okay!

I think she should come out of the closet and admit that Lindsay is really Marissa, and become ONE OF US. Just let it all out! Come clean! It's okay, Marissa... It's okay! We don't care. We'll still love you. We're like family here.

Come on, Marissa. Join us. Join our little society.

ernest: Are you LindseyR? You've got the same out of touch with reality, elitist attitude. The value of music, IS a very valid topic and obviously one that people are interested in, and that raises their passions. For you to come on and discount what every one else says is very flippant, and arrogant.

You must really identify with LindseyR or be LindseyR. The world just doesn't understand you, do they? If only we were all as smart, and proper, and only posted on, and started appropriate threads like you, this forum and the world would be a perfect little place, wouldn't it?

I don't think you even come back and read the responses to some of the threads you create. Remember THIS. . First, I corrected you on the name of the program, which you never acknowledged. Then I answered your question very well, I think, and you never acknowledged that either.

DJ, you're right but in most cases that doesn't usually happen until an artist develops a reputation among peers, critics, and fans. In most cases, that takes years.

Oh stop it! Just admit it! You are her! Stop trying to play us. Stop hiding behind your mask.

By the way, music and art are NOT a competition to see who's best or fastest or most prolific.
Now YOU are the one who is cheapening art... Hmmmmmm.
Art is what it is. A window to the soul -the essence of the artist. It speaks on many levels. Some are very candid and intimate. Some are not -that's okay, it's still vital.

Hey, I'm willing to buy a CD for 100... eek (Estonian krones). But after listening to some examples (and reading: "404 Error -- File Not Found" while trying to download a few others) I came to conclusion that Marissa's music is not my cup of tea. Sorry!

*) 1.00 USD = 13.50 EEK

I am back.

I'll tell ya what though. You might be able to sell some kind of "added value" package for a new artist, for $100.00. For instance, for $100.00 you might get a CD, a Video, membership to a fan club with a newsletter, personal correspondence from the artist, reduced rate to concerts, etc., etc.

Nobody in their right mind is going to buy a CD for $100.00 from anybody, that's just foolish.

So you put together some great, amazing package for that $100.00, and if the artist has the musical chops to back it up, enough people might go for it to make it worthwhile. That thing Marissa has going on her website has got to be a joke. Unless she's going to have sex with me after I buy the CD, no dice. Monkey Funster, I think I just dislocated my bacon sandwich,.........again!

Also, it's bad form, to insult your fans or potential fans. The prevailing attitude of Marissa's website is "Everybody is stupid and they suck, now give me your money." That's probably not going to work.

Music is supposed to be for everyone, not just those willing to forward the $100; it is something that is within reach for the common man. Does someone who can afford that $100 deserve music more than a homeless guy? A true artist would care about the music for its own sake, and not need to charge such an outlandish fee. I understand that musicians need to pay the bills, etc. but there is a reasonable limit. Similar thoughts to this have been expressed, but... if you charge $100 for a CD, why stop there? Go on to a grand or two. Hmm, still not enough, let's go into the hundreds of thousands...if your idol/you were truly an amazing talented artist, you would be more concerned over expressing your ideas to others than how much money you can rake in.

this is just a tiny bit of what this tremendous talent can do. They are now selling nothing but burger king specials. these people have such limited abilities, and everyone is out of reality.
This is what a real genius sounds like..just a small amount of it.
If anyone is that talented, please tell Marissa about it, it may humble her. this is her managements email. freakvox@yahoo.com

She is more gifted and versitile then anyone they have ever signed as a singer songwriter..only because they are censoring what we are exposed to.

Lady...Get over yourself..It's clear you have no ear for music whatsoever. Green Tea has problems. Marissa has BAD timing issues, floating faster and slower...She is slurring her words, and her vocal technique leaves much to be desired. Her Piano playing also needs much work. This is obviuos stuff here that anyone can here that i know.

Your posts sound like some kind of an automated response system. You keep saying the same thing over and over. BTW, you suck.

I think LindseyR may actually be some grad student's thesis. An odd sort of software. I've suspected as much about other posters in the past, but this one seems to have added new... ummm... features. It's not bad, but the grammar and myopia still make it a bit cumbersome. Maybe I'll buy into version 3.

Wow, that's pretty cool. I've been lurking on this board for months, read god knows how many thousands of posts, and my first contribution expresses a very similar thought had almost simultaneously by TheWewus. That's a good thing, IMO.

I guess I've officially joined the board. Unfortunately, I don't type fast enought to reach 10,000 posts any time soon...

Yeah Brian, maybe LindseyR is just some kind of bug in the UBB software, or a virus. Maybe we could get them to reformatt their drives or something, to make it stop.

What is your fucking point? Why don't YOU email her!!?? Why do you want US to do it? Are you trying to scam us to get our email addresses or something? And why go through her so-called 'management'? Why not contact her directly? You aren't making any sense!

You aren't responding to what other people here are saying! You keep repeating the same line over and over again.

Here's the deal: If you want to talk music and discuss how you feel about the state of music today, then fine -welcome aboard. If you are just here to relentlessly spam us with hype about Marissa and how we need to listen to her demos, you are going to get booted from this forum and your threads will be deleted.

We've put up with plenty from you already. We have a special thread for showcasing music that we use -and that YOU SHOULD HAVE USED. Most people who pull that kind of crap here don't last very long.

You need to show a little respect here and stop trying to play us for idiots.

You seriously need to reply to this with your intentions.

I got one for you - Laura Love released 4 CDs on her own label before going to Mercury Records for 2 more, and subsequently issued 2 more on indie labels. That's 8 CDs to none.

Her current tour itinerary has 26 dates booked though the end of the year, instead of a rant about why she's not playing out.

The sample song on her site may not be the best showcase of her voice, but I've heard her sing - I mixed her band at the Chico World Music Festival several years ago, and the girl's got serious vocal game - and she plays bass.

Oh, and before you just dismiss the song she has posted as McMusic, you should read this - there's real meaning behind it.

Look, Lindsey - I think you shoulda figured it out by now that, while most everyone on this thread thinks Marissa has some talent, it appears that the majority opinion is that her examples of this talent do not bear out the praise that you feel so compelled to lavish upon her, nor the opinions of herself that she puts forward on her website.

If you think she's the greatest thing since oxygen, then fine - send her $100 bucks, get your limited edition CD whenever it comes out, and continue to love her from afar as long as your girlfriend tolerates it. But save your breath (and what's left of your dignity) and let it drop, already.

Let me see if I got this right, my French is a bit musty...

"I am sorry that I am unpopular and vulgar. I am sorry that I hide from reality in my music. I am sorry that I have poor skin and am naked in my videos. I am self deluded in believing that there are strong and creative songs. I am sorry that there is some narcissism there. If that disturbs you, please find my address and throw rocks at my house. If you think that I am snob, I am actually possessed of a massive personality disorder. I charge hundred dollars Cd, because people in this country charge much for psychiatrist. They were not putting enough pennies in my guitar case. I obtain a large baby pacifier after all. It is a very top-of-the-range piano. For the love of god I barely understand how to play it. One considers me as somebody who wants to consistently sing flat. It is much easier for them to accept me as out of tune goddess. When people are mentally lazy, they delude themselves into thinking that they have something to offer pop culture. I am in the market for a cock slave. People must become original thinkers. I can't get enough poop to fill my tummy."

Here, let me try too (this one is a literal translation)...

"Je suis dsol que je ne fais pas partie de la culture populaire vulgarian."
I am sorry that I am not a member of vulgar pop culture.

"Je suis dsol que je ne maudis pas dans ma musique."
I am sorry that I do not curse in my music.

"Je suis dsol qu'il n'y a aucune peau et des vidos nus."
I am sorry that I don't show my body in music videos.

"Je suis dsol qu'il y a des chansons fortes et cratrices."
I am sorry that my songs are strong and creative.

"Je suis dsol qu'il y a quelque raffinage(raffinement) l."
I am sorry that there is some refinement here.

"Si cela vous drange, allez s'il vous plat et achetez aux artistes d'tiquette principaux."
If that disturbs you, please go and buy artists with conventional behavior.

"Si vous pensez que je suis snob, excellent, tourne le canal."
If you think I am a snob, fine, change the channel.

"Je charge cent dollars un cd, parce que les gens dans ce pays estiment seulement de l'argent."
I charge $100 a cd, because people in this country value only money.

"Ils ne pensent pas que l'art est de valeur."
They do not think that art is valuable.

"J'obtiens un bb petrof grand aprs tout."
I will obtain a baby grand Petrof (piano) after all.

"C'est un piano trs haut de gamme."
It's a very confident piano. (sort of lost in translation)

"Les gens cette terre estiment que c'est prtentieux en haut le niveau de pense de masse de culture pop."
The people of this earth think it is pretentious and arrogrant to think above pop culture.

"On considre quelqu'un qui veut lever les standards snob."
Someone who wants to raise the standards is considered a snob.

"Chacun veut se vautrer dans les mmes standards bas."
Everyone wants to wallow in the same low standards.

"C'est beaucoup plus facile pour eux de ne pas avoir de hauts standards."
It's much easier for them to not have high standards.

"Quand les gens sont mentalement paresseux, ils acceptent des standards de culture pop."
When people are intellectually lazy, they accept the standards of pop culture.

"Les gens doivent devenir des penseurs originaux."
People ought to become independent thinkers.

Well, that was my try. I'm surprised four years of French actually was worth anything.

(Edit: it was harder to read before.)

If you don't want to participate in this thread, why don't you NOT participate, instead of writing posts that say, "I am now not participating". You are participating. You sat down, you thought about what to say, and you wasted time writing what you did, yet you somehow think you're better than everyone else. I must send your manager e-mails to try and humble you.

Ok I've got a question. without hearing any of the music. Who would pay 100 dollars for anything in 16bit 44k format??? Maybe if it was an absolutely superb recording in SACD or DVD audio format with a big wide soundstage and pinpoint imaging it would be possibly worth it. But it would take an idiot to pay that kind of money for a CD that you couldn't play in a 50,000 dollar audio system and smile.

I have written eres and marissa, and they didn't just give out details about how many cds she has sold.
I am sure with that voice she has sold cds.
, and I am sure people would pay that much money for a cd. I just gave a donation and got a single.
I can't afford 100 dollars right now, and want to see what else she has done..Maybe in the future.
she is working on four new cd's at one time..
34 songs.
But being rich is no proof of anything.
big numbers impress stupid people. 100 dollars in not that much for great art.
But Mc.donolds does impress some people, so does burger king..and KFC. these places are rich.
Does that mean they are worth something >>>>>NO> \:D

Ok, here's the deal. I carry a lot of tools around with me. If I ever see Marissa playing anywhere, I'm going to take my insulated cutters in, and cut the power cable going to her PA, just for the hell of it.

Why is it that sooooo many women, just by being average think they are soooooo "GREAT". Just because you have a new car, a cell phone, cigarettes, and new shoes - doesn't make you intelligent or good looking or talented or any of the other craaaaap that Helen Gurly-Brown has been selling you in "COSMO" for the last 20 freakin' years. GET BACK TO REALITY! YOU ARE NOT A PRINCESS! WE (guy's) STILL LOVE YOU! BUT YOU ARE GETTING WAY TOO CREEPY! Reality is coooooool!

Well, funny, I seem to remember our regularly scheduled programming being very rudely, pretentiously, and delusionally interrupted by a falsely identified bull$h!t "artist" engaged in promoting a heftily priced sales of CDs... kinda like having your party crashed, not at all like having one's choice of channels.

By the way, as for dentists, someone who has WORKED HARD AND LONG to LEARN AND HONE their "craft", and can relieve me of a toothe-ache or potentially life-threatening ailment definitely deserves top-dollar.

Someone who has stayed up too late a few nights to make a bad joke of a craft, and CAUSES me an earache, deserves little more than humoring, if that.

I could swear I wrote an exceedingly sarcastic post when the thread had it's original title and the initial post had its original text. Now I don't find it.

Lindsey, to give you the benefit of the doubt for the time being, let's say you are not, in fact, Marissa Marchant. Do you realize how much damage you do her image by making a fool out of yourself on this board?

You keep asking for music that is better than hers to "humble her". I for one haven't heard Marissa's music, so I can't very well participate in such an endeavor. But for one thing, quality is subjective. What one person thinks is phenomenal is crap to another. The issue is not how good or not good she is, it's the incredible ego. Most people are repelled by those who think so highly of themselves, even if it is deserved. For whatever reason, humility is the generally-accepted "preferred mode of choice" in our society. And, of course, insulting her colleagues (ie. the rest of the music industry) is a poor career choice.

There is, in fact, plenty of music out there that is not "Burger King" music. Most of it just happens to not fall under the umbrellas of the big record companies. I could point you to my own favorite band, though they surely sound nothing like Marissa Marchant. Floater . They are quite the opposite of "anti-talent". And they have been independant for their whole 10-year career.

One last thing: stick by what you write. Don't edit a post and completely replace the text. No one's going to forget, and it just make people take you less seriously.

Sventvkg gives an excellent recommendation. Jonatha is in a class by herself. If I may offer another suggestion: http://www.bicrunga.com - Bic, Jonatha, and Kate form a sort of musical "Holy Trinity" to me.

Actually, this post isn't for the benefit of the virus LindseyR... I'm just curious if there are any other Bic Runga fans on this board? :p

Philter and Evil Mushroom-

Thanks, Guys!

EM really captured the emotional vacuum of Lindsey's writing! Philter really sounded like writers from the "Simpsons" trying to write a farce-translation of a Guitar Center commecial in Montreal! Those were great!

Hmmmmm

I happened to stop and think about this (after swimming through 2 more pages of stupidity) and I came to this conclusion.

I have hanging on my wall a lithograph of Night Cafe by Vincent Van Gogh. This is art - debatable though it may be. I paid $20 for this framed litho. I equate this to the CD in question.

My question to LindseyR/Marissa/whatever your name is:

How much is the hard drive/2" tape/ADAT your album was recorded on being sold for at auction? Let me know. The last dozen or so Van Gogh originals sold for $300,000 - $21,000,000. When her original master sells for $100,000,000 I may consider buying this "collector's item" lithograph version (CD) for $100.

Perhaps you can convince Lindsey to start posting in the Collaboration Corner?

Hey- I was offline for a week, and I just saw this thread. Can someone sum it up for me in a few paragraphs? It's too long, and some of it was edited. \:\(

Groupie for pretentious, average-talented, possibly schizophrenic singer/songwriter trolls for said idol's non-existent $100-a-pop CD by accusing the rest of the world of being shallow and not recognizing great art when it comes over uninvited and pisses on the floor.

In a hilarious twist, as Groupie-Troll-boy fails in his mission to wake the music world from a coma, he discovers the "Edit post" icon, and starts to change the title and 1st post of a 5-page thread in an effort to push his message off to curious onlookers with short attention spans.

This Fall on CBS... \:D

And Lindsey, Sal's right - come over to Collab corner and put your ill-gotten money from your CD's where your mouth is.
