WELCOME!

Welcome to the Low Down! Were glad you’ve come by to see us. Please read this topic to help you enjoy your stay.

We are a community of bassists, formerly sponsored (but not restricted) by Bass Player magazine.

We enjoy sharing with other bassists from around the world about music, gear, techniques, education, and playing experiences. What makes this internet forum different from some of the others is that we have a true community here. You can stop by and ask questions, or you can get to know us and be part of this place. When possible, we even try to meet in person!

This topic (called a thread) explains life here on the Low Down. This thread is closed you cant post here the moderators use this thread to help you enjoy your visits.

The next set of posts will deal with the following topics:

  • Etiquette
  • Buying and Selling
  • Forum Facilities
  • Searching
  • Threads of Note
  • Contacts

Please let the moderators know if there are any questions or corrections (just click on one of our names at the bottom of the page to send us a message).

Thanks!

The Moderators

Etiquette

We have certain rules that we (the moderators, along with the community) use to keep the Low Down friendly, inviting, and informative.

Language:

We prefer civil language. The f word and crude sexual references will be edited. Were not prudes, but we do respect people in general. We also have many young people visiting and want to retain a level of decorum. This is admittedly an arbitrary thing, and well be happy to discuss any incidents.

Respect for Others:

We respect each other on the forum. That doesnt mean we shut off heated exchanges. It does mean we limit harsh discussions, and will not allow personal attacks. Sometimes moderators will edit or delete these posts. For long-time community members, we are more lenient. You may be surprised by some posts are not removed rest assured that posters are often spoken to privately to move discussions back to a more suitable level. Note that respect for others includes companies and corporations. Thats not to say that you cant be critical, but that there should be some basis in fact.

English and Grammar:

We have many members who live in (or come from) non-English speaking countries. We applaud their efforts to post here (in English) and support them in any way that we can. If you see that a poster is from a non-English speaking country, read their posts carefully and consider their experience when responding. Many of our most valued contributors do not have English as their primary tongue. (That said, some of our most many eloquent posters have learned English as their second or third language!)

We expect that those members who are from English speaking countries to do their best in using proper grammar and spelling. This will help you communicate with other bass players. It may help you write better by expressing yourself more clearly. Think about reading your post before submitting it. This site is not an IM chat site and we will be cranky if you dont bother with capitalization, punctuation, and spelling. Sure everyone makes a mistake, but stream-of-conscious posting will be roundly criticized. Write as if someone will search this forum a year from now and need the information that you have provided make it easy for them!

Topics:

We discuss bass and bass-related topics. When starting a topic, try to make the title clear and complete. Other topics that are of interest to the community do come up, and we prefix those with OT: this stands for off topic. We do not allow topics about controversial subjects (especially politics and religion). These subjects come up frequently, but we work hard to not allow them to drive a discussion. They will be prominent when relative to music, to our community, or when presented in a post in a respectful way. Note that many of our members are active in their religious pursuits. Thus, religious ideas do come up. We do not accept posts that try to change peoples religious or political beliefs. Therefore, please try to keep conversations on topic.

Hijacking:

We try to keep conversations on topic as much as possible. When one topic leads to another, someone will generally start a new topic to continue that conversation. The advantage of this is to keep the threads on one topic so that when you search or look up information, the threads apply to the topic title.

Buying and Selling

We DO NOT allow threads/topics that are about selling your equipment, or asking to buy equipment. Please note that we have a sub-forum called Classifieds for this purpose. You can see it at the top of the main Low Down screen, and can also get to it by clicking the underlined links.

We have separated the Classifieds forum because there would be too many of these sale threads (and related threads marketing all sorts of stuff referred to as spam). We want to build a community of bassists, not become a trading site.

There are some ways to indicate that you are selling or trying to buy something (along with posting in our Classifieds forum). We allow the following:

  • Single post if it is appropriate to the topic, you may post that you are selling or buying something. For example, in a thread about Fender basses from the 80s, you might give a review of your own instrument, and then say that youd like to sell it.
  • Signature each member can have a signature that is displayed at the bottom of all of your posts. You can put sale information in the signature. This way, it does not take up a thread or a post, but can be viewed by the community.
  • Private Messages sometimes a member will discuss a piece of gear, and you may write to them privately if you think they’d like to sell it. (More on Private Messages in Forum Facilities).

Forum Facilities

The Music Player Network owns and maintains these forums. It’s powered by Invision, and we have an administrator (Jim Quinn).

Your first step in getting help is the FAQ that is just above the thread list (upper right of screen). The questions (and answers) should get the info you need.

There is a forum to provide updates and tips about the forums called Forum News. Please use this forum if you have questions or problems - the answers are probably there.

If none of these (or the items below) help, be patient, and write to one mods. Were happy to help.

Please note that the SEARCH has its own post below.

Posting a message:

There are a few ways to do this.  At the bottom of any thread is a box where you can “reply to this topic”.  That’s pretty easy.

Another way to post a message is to hit the quote buttons in someone else’s post. That will cause the edit screen to come up with the quoted post text inside. All of the edit facilities are available.

You can edit your own posts after they’re posted. This helps you correct information or fix that oops posting. There is a time limit on this (12 hours). If you need to edit something older than that, let a moderator know.

Members:

If you click on a member name, you can then look at their profile, and send them a private message (note if the member turned off Private Messages in their profile, you wont have this option). Private Messages show up (when you receive one) as a blinking notification in the column heading of the forum screens. You can also receive email notification.

There are many more facilities. Check the help guide.

Threads of Note

There are many noteworthy threads that have been started (and continued) over the years.

Before we had this sticky thread, others (starting with TimR) have built a thread that points to the rest.

Here are a few that are most useful. And we include the Essential Threads thread for your further exploration.

Spending time looking over old threads can actually be fairly interesting!

Contacts

However over the avatar or click on the names (like mine on this thread) and you can view the person's profile, send a PM (Private Message), add this to your "watched posts" (you get email when the thread is updated), or see their posts (you get a list of the most recent threads that the person has posted on).

For now, use the mods as contact points.

  • 1 year later...

Contacts (continued)

Left Click on the names (like mine on this thread) and you can view the person's profile, send a PM (Private Message)...

PMs can be an excellent tool for following up with an individual about something specific that may not require full forum knowledge or participation. For example, you may realize that you live near a forumite who teaches and want to take lessons. This communication is probably best done via PM.

Similarly, on the "classifieds" subforum, expressing interest in and arranging deals for gear is best handled most times via PM. However, often questions about how a bit of kit that's for sale works, its age, etc. can be useful to all readers.

One more thought on this...from time to time, a particular post may get under your skin, seem offensive, or just strike you as inappropriate. You should always feel free to PM one of the mods about this, but also note that there's a "whistle blower" feature that allows you to automatically flag a post for our attention. (In my experience as mod, the most common occurrence of the "whistle blower" feature is to flag "spam.") "Whistle blowing" will alert all mods plus the board administrator, and will result in the quickest response than an individual PM.
