Actually, someday I'd like to buy one for my daughter. For now though, extra cash is something I do not have.

Hell with an antique, get a VPI and a nice tube preamp for it. Whole different listening experience.

I've also heard some of the finest TT's in combination with some of the finest TT preamps, powered by some of the finest audiophile tube amps driving some of the finest speakers money could buy.

And I'll take the latter over the former all day and twice on Sunday.

I got nothing against ancient waxes on a Vic, but when I roll out a Bluenote or some really great late 60's classical vinyl, I want to hear every last detail.

That won't happen on a Vic.

Well, that because music on a victrola. Was recorded acousticlly, without the use of electronics. Where as music from the 60's used electronics. Of course I don't have to tell you this.

I think collecting old players is less about sound quality and the recordings and more about collecting a piece of history.

I wonder...

In many periods, whoever was doing the recording compensated to optimize the sound for the medium. This gave the recordings for that era certain characteristics. I wonder if they did that for those early wax and disc recordings, or if they didn't have a chance because the technology was so new or changing quickly (I don't know if it did), or if they didn't even think of doing that.

Also, when the technology did change, they often had to "unlearn" what they used to do for the old technology.

Absolutely. I think the old Vics are really cool, and it's fascinating to listen to the old waxes on them once in a while. I just don't think I could stand to listen to that level of fidelity on a regular basis. Just me, man, no worries.

Yeah, well I don't play mine on a regular basis. However, I do playe them, when I find a new record of cylinder. It does however help to play them toe keep the machine running, and prevent dust from building up and gumming the motors. Of course, regular greasing and oiling helps too.
