Hi Myles,

I talked to you at the Baked Potato Friday night during a break in Carl Verheyen's set (I'm the one moving to Florida).

Just wanted to thank you for going through Carl's rig for me...somebody else got to talking to you and I didn't get a chance to say Thanks. I really appreciate it (plus the heads up on the VHT power amps.) :)

Myles,

I believe the Venus 3 is switchable to 7 watts, compared to the 25 watt setting I currently use with my Quiana. Wouldn't that make a fairly big difference in volume?

Thanks,

Dave

Nope ... cutting the wattage in half is only a -3dB change.

And ... cathode biased amps sound much louder for their wattage. This is why a 30 watt Vox AC-30 was just as loud as a 100 watt Fender twin reverb.

Your only option is a decent attenuator such as a Dr. Z Airbrake.

Hey Myles, I was doing a little "window shopping", and I was wondering why these two speakers, which are remarkably similar, have such a gap between their prices:

http://professional.celestion.com/guitar/products/heritage/detail.asp?ID=6

http://professional.celestion.com/guitar/products/classic/detail.asp?ID=6

Do you know why these two have radically different price tags?

Never argue with an idiot. They'll bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Ask Celestion or somebody like AES (www.tubesandmore.com)

One may be a real British made one and other made in their Chinese factory.

I think you hit the nail on the head, Myles. The Heritage series are made in England. I THINK it may even be in the original factory in Ipswich??? Also, they have claims that they are truer to the original classic greenback speakers;

Hmm, astute conclusion, although, on the back of both speakers, they both say they are made in England. Time I sent an e-mail across the pond.

Myles,

I haven't been able to get the GT12AX7M's locally for quite some time now. Are they no longer being produced or shipped?

Thanks,

Dave

They are being produced ... retooled and better than ever.

BUT ... the supply is not keeping pace with the demand and there are a lot of backorders.

Myles,

I've read in a couple of places where the Fender Bassman doesn't have a true bias adjustment. Can you provide a little info on this, and what do you recommend as far as current draw in tubes, colder, mid-range, hotter?

Use a mid range tube as the bias is fixed via a fixed resistor.

In the GT line a #6 works great in the 6L6GE.

Hi Miles. I'm another "newbie" to the forum. I have a Fender Blues DeVille Reissue. (4-10's) I replaced the 6L6 output tubes with Groove Tubes "SubStitubes", now using EL84's as output tubes...My problem is, it's still too loud to get the tone it's capable of when it's really opened up. Any other suggestions?? Also what would you recommend the "settings" be set on. It's a great sounding amp, just way too loud. My guitars are a Hagstrom Super Swede and an American Deluxe Strat....Thanks.

At this point you need to look at an attenuator such as a Dr. Z Airbrake.

Myles,

Are matched power tubes as important on cathode biased amps compared to other amps? I've got some nice tubes that are different by 6 to 7 milliamps as far as current draw, about 20%, and I'd like to use them on a couple of Carr amps if the bias circuitry in these amps will adjust individually to each tube. Will cathode biased amps normally adjust for each tube separately?

If the amp has a split bias then you are fine. If it has one bias supply for a duet or quad then it is very important from my own point of view to have matched output sets.

Myles,

Maybe you can answer a question that's been bugging me for awhile now. Ampeg stuck a couple of diodes from each leg of the O-transformer's primary to ground(Pic 1) on certain amps. The V4b amp already has a fullwave PS(Pic 2). Wondering their reasoning, and if you might have a thought.

Thanks! Best, Paul

I don't know their logic for why they did what they did, I suspect it is to protect and stabilize.

Hi there, my guitar is acting like an antenna when plugged in to my Alesis Midiverb4. I have a Taylor guitar with K&K Trinity pic ups. When unplugged I hear nothing but the usually bit of noise, but as soon as the guitar is plugged in I can listen to the radio. Any ideas for a solution?

Could be a lot of things from the cables you are using to the ground in you place.

Hi Myles,

I've bought a Gibson GA5 6 watt amp and will receive it Tuesday. From what I have read, the 8" speaker is connected by an RCA plug. Can I buy an adapter or pigtail that will allow me to connect an external cab with a 1/4" connector?

Thanks

Anthony

Hi Myles

I just picked up a Dr.Z Route 66 amp, and was wondering if you had any preferences on the tubes to use for the 66.

I am especially curious about the EF86. I see some on the Internet, but it doesnt appear like there are many different brands to pick from.

Right now I am looking at a pair of IEC/Mullard EF86 tubes, but was wondering if there was any modern production of this tube you would recommend?

Also...any tips on optimum setup for this amp...the bias/mA "best choice"...etc...and any other comments you might have about the Route 66.

Thanks!

I have written reams on this amp and there is a lot on the Dr. Z Forum in the Route 66 area .... http://drzamplifiers.proboards41.com/index.cgi?board=route

Yes...I've checked out the Dr.Z Forum....some good stuff there.

But where can I find the reams that you've written about the 66 amp...?

Is it just on the Dr.Z fourm board...or is it located on your website...or is it elswhere...?

Thanks!

I have not written much on the 66 as so many other folks have and it is such a well known amp. I have a lot in the Z area of my own GAB website on the 28, 45, and 88 which share the same chassis and design topology.
