Its been a number of years since I seen a good live rock and roll concert.Just curious whats the average price to get good tickets close to the stage for a popular band?

Define "popular".

Big reunion acts like VH, Eagles, et al: $1,000 and up.

"Flavor of the month" MTV bands: $100 and up.

Really great (but not mega-star) bands in small venues: $30-35.

I know where my money's going.

Typcial arena and shed shows for top selling artists run in the $120-250 range for face value. The issue is you can never buy at face value, as the what I call "legal Scalpers" make deals for large amounts of tickets and purchase before the tickets go on sale to the general public, and mark them up anywhere from 20-2000%, making it virtually impossible to buy at face value.

There should be (and perhaps someone reading this might start the ball rolling) laws prohibiting this behavior IMHO, restricting the common mans ability to buy a ticket at a fair price. I refuse to do business with these people.

I dont ever attend a rock concert, as these are not performed in my town. I am looking in even the nearby cities if a concert is going to be there in near future.

I'm so glad I was able to see most of my fave bands in the 70s for 7-9 dollars....general admission so I got to stand directly in front of the band.

Ticketmaster and the scalpers (Oh, some of them call themselves ticket brokers. ) are helping to kill live music.

$1000 and up for tickets to see the Eagles? God, that's outrageous. I paid $76 for a great seat to see them when they were on their Hell Freezes Over tour, but that was quite awhile ago. Great show, but anything over 80 bucks is out for me. Even then, I would have to save up for a ticket.
