Whether your in your car or at home, is there a group, song, CD that you always seem to listen to over and over again. I have close to 300 CD's plus a bunch of compilation CD's I've done and I always seem to come back to certain CD's when I switch out the CD's in my car. So which groups or CD's do you listen to over and over again?

I seem to always go back to all of Bill Evans, Keith Jarret ECM stuff, Brad Melhdau's Art of the Trio.

I will switch to different things in between like classical or MMW, or Miles, or Chick or Kenny Werner, etc., but I always end up back to those three.

It's an eclectic list, but it's my regular rotation...

Faith No More (specifically Angel Dust and Album of the Year)
Procol Harum (Shine on Brightly and Grand Hotel, now that I've just procured it on vinyl)
Rick Wakeman (Henry VIII, King Arthur, and 20,000 leagues)
System of a Down (predominantly Hypnotize, which I feel was their best album)
and here lately, Porcupine Tree (can't stop listening to Fear of a Blank Planet)

Beyond the jazz greats, I always go back to the repository of gold (70s music) when it comes to an enjoyable listening experience as well as rejuvenating my personal well of creativity.

I have to agree with ProfD, I go back to the music of my youth. I don't listen to music much except in the car these days unless it is to learn another 60 tunes or more. I loaded my mp3 player with old soul and R&B so I am grooving most everywhere I go.

If I had to pick an artist, just one it would probably be Delbert McClinton.

I try to investigate new music in terms of Jazz and Be-bop constantly. . . .and I listen to material by artists in Rock, Blues and Jazz from my yut!

Unless it's something I think I missed ,even in Rock, I tend not to go back..... I will though listen to a old Procal Harum album and purchase it if I feel there is something for me to learn. Sometimes yeah I just want to day trip in the past too! There is a bred in the bone Rock and Blues side of me I have become aware of 'And' a vanguard that still wants to grow and investigate new music, Jazz and Classical, New Age World music etc......Primarily Modern Jazz though!

My 'coaching' has really helped me maintain alot of forward momentum and helped resolve and separate alot of ego complexities that plagued me when I was younger! Gotta be careful not to throw out angels with demons though! I made those mistakes before! So alot of times I really think about my choices of what I going to listen to if it's not 'Twinki' junk food listing. I allow myself that too, I realize I need that also! I will listen to James Brown or Kraftwork or Sitar music or Bluegrass, Tom Waits (Heart of Saturday Night, Mule Variations) also, anything really!

Also, It's good, though admiteddly I don't have time to do this as often as I would like, but I really think it's the best way to listen, is away from the car and in your den, living room or music room or bed away from the 'madness' or driving the wife the kids the dogs/cats and really try to just relax and 'hear ,feel and experience'.....

maybe pour a light vodka or a light smoke' or a cigar or cigarette. or after a jog or workout... whatever relaxes you and opens you up! I 'try' to have my stereo speakers set up optimally and eq right or headphones for the material too! THis is different than having Soulive on or Frank Sinatra while preparing a dinner party with the wife! Introspective/ deep listening !

ps: If I sound like a pompus stuffed shirt or something just kick me (not to hard)!

while playing many times I just listen (or try very hard to) to the Bass player and Drummer until I forget my name and waist size, that helps too! Now and zen, if I make a mistake, I'm usually too involved with them to beat myself up, of course others may try to! Then I go get a drink or get fired....I have a day job!

Bruce Hornsby: Albums-Hot House: I love Spider Fingers and White Wheeled Limousine. Harbor Lights: Long Tall Cool One and Rainbow’s Cadillac.
Steely Dan: Album-Pick one, I’ll listen to it.
Billy Joel: Albums-All of them. I still listen too and play "Piano Man". Amazing, it was released in 1972.
The Who: Albums-Who’s Next and Tommy.

The following stuff never gets old for me:

Keith Jarrett: The Koln Concert
Jean Michel Jarre: Oxygene
Tom Howard: The Harvest, Solo Piano

Toto: anything...great melodic rock
Simon & Garfunkel: Parsley, Sage, Rosemary & Thyme
Def Leppard: Hysteria, Pyromania

How's that for a disparate mix?

In my truck during the day, I listen to new music that I'm learning, writing or arranging.

Late at night or after a gig when I listen for myself, it's always Bach, Beethoven or Mozart. Everything else comes and goes - this is a constant for me. I have a CD library of George Szell and the Cleveland Orchestra doing all of the Beethoven and Mozart symphonies that lives in my truck.

You know one of the absolute great things about this thread is that I see so much music I had forgotten about and now I'm pulling it all out again to listen to again.

One cd that I missed when it first came out, that I'm really enjoying is Vince Mendoza's Epiphany. I've also bought some of the scores to it from V's website so that I can follow along and try and learn something from the master. This cd is with Abercrombie,Brecker,Erskine,M.Johnson,Lovano,John Taylor,Kenny Wheeler and the LSO.
