I'm not clear what is expected of a recording engineer and of a mixing engineer.
Whose job is it to fix the timing and tuning issues of musicians?
I recorded a project and afterwards spent many hours fixing many timing and tuning issues. Then the project was sent to a mixing engineer and subsequently to a mastering engineer.
Should I get some of the mixing credits? Or is it fair to assume that timing and tuning issues are expected to be fixed by the recording engineer?

The tracking engineer is on site when these mistakes are being made. Where would -you- fix them? I don't know that they are always the responsibility of the recordist at all... if I'm playing out of tune, shouldn't I be responsible for that? Why is it someone else's problem? Besides that, is there a producer? It is not entirely clear to me that the problems are the responsibility of the recording engineer, but it should be clear that the time and place to fix these mistakes are when and where they are being made. "Fix it in the mix" is lazy bullshit.

yeah, that seems to be a trend, doesn't it? Spend days fixing the errors on a three minute song? I just have them spend another three minutes. My mantra: "It's a fucking three minute pop song. Learn your part." I know how to do my job, why don't they?

Bill, I couldn't agree more. However, it seems to fall upon the mixing engineers these days clean up crap. This is why the Lord Alge's always asked for masters to come to them on 32 trk digital tapes, so that they could fly parts around and fix things.

If I'm the recording engineer, I'll try to get them to play it right and do the comp myself if it's a vocal, unless they want to do the comp themselves later on. I really say that the fixing falls on the person who hears it, who is willing to make it sound right. More and more, that responsibilty gets passed on to the mixer.
