I have gotten two 8 ft bass traps in two of the corners. Somehow an 8 ft trap doesn't fit easily into an 8 ft corner.
my last 8 ft trap needs to be able to be moved into the corner where the door is when I'm recording and then pulled back out when I'm done so I can open the door. Right now I could get it into the corner by tapping on the bottom edges until it fits but then I wouldn't be able to get it back out. Is it OK to sit it in the corner in a way that it is not snug so I can easily take it out when I'm done recording?
I can lean the top of the trap into the ceiling corner and then let the bottom of the trap be a little bit away from the wall at the bottom so air and sound could easily go behind the trap at the bottom. Will this still work to trap bass??
I've also tapped on the corners of this trap to attempt to bend the corner bead frame so the trap is a little shorter but I haven't been able to make it short enough yet.

WOW, this room is going to look a lot smaller when all these traps are up! I can't believe how much smaller it looks when using the 4 ft traps in the lateral corners where the wall and ceiling meet.

If you have to lean it a little bit it'll still work fine.

I have my home studio about done. Finally!
I may make one more mid/high absorber because I've only made two so far.
Hopefully tomorrow night I'll be able to see how my guitars sound in the room.
I have 4" thick mineral wool bass traps in 3 corners from floor to ceiling. I then have one 2x4' bass trap in the last corner. I then have a 2x4' bass trap in each of the 4 horizontal corners. I then have 2-2x4' mid/high absorbers spaced about 2" inches off the wall on two of the walls.
Do you think this will be enough or will I probably need another mid/high absorber? This room will be primarily for recording acoustic guitar and vocals. All drums machine tracks, synth, organ, piano, electric guitar and bass will be recorded direct so the room will have no effect on these tracks.

I think I wouldn't go any deader for now. The problem is that the vocals could stand it to be deader - but the guitar will get really flat and thin' if you kill it much more.

Play A LOT with mic placement and orientation with doing vocals to find the best spot and you'll be OK.

Have fun.

I took down all the DIY diffusors I made out of pvc and took them to the basement and leaned them against the wall at the bottom of the steps and strangely enough any noise I made on the steps seemed bigger when the diffusors were there.
Should I forget diffusion of maybe put up a few of the diffusors made from 4" pipe on the wall that would have the earliest reflections??

Confused. So is the room we just did in the basement or is that a different room? How big is it?

No, my studio is upstairs and it's the one I just put all the DIY bass traps in. It is roughly 11'x11'x8'.
I did have diy diffusors in the studio but now I took them down to the bassment just to get them out of the studio.
Oddly enough, in the area where I have the diffusors in the basement I can hear a difference. Maybe my home made diffusors do work.
I'm wondering if it would be worthwhile to put a few of the diy diffusors in my studio where I put the diy bass traps.

Honestly no in my opinion.

1. The room is too small to support much in the way of diffusion.

2. IF you were trying to do diffusion, you'd want something that would work MUCH lower (read be MUCH bigger).

But hey, if you want to ADD back in a little of the diffusion, it won't hurt to try. Just don't pull down any of the bass control you just put in there. You defnintely need all of it you can get in that room.

I think for now I'll skip diffusion. If I did use any I was just going to put it on the wall that would probably get the most early reflections.
Well, Last night I finally got to try out the room to see how much of an improvement I'd made with the DIY bass traps.
I got out my CA GUITARS Legacy dreadnaught to see how it would sound since it has the most low end of all my guitars.
The room definetly sounds way more balanced. I didn't try to record anything but I played the guitar and listened closely. Before the DIY bass traps I could just play and listen and hear the excessive bass and lack of high end harmonics(because I'd overtreated the room with Foam By Mail). The low end now definetly sounds more focused and not at all muddy or excessively boomy. The high end is back to what it should be too.
These are my initial findings without recording in the room yet but I think I'll be pleasantly surprised when I record in this studio again.
THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO HAS HELPED ME WITH GREAT INFORMATION!!
