Finally got around to making my panels this weekend. I made 4, 5.5 inch thick panels for the corners and 5, 3.5 inch thick panels for the reflection points. All panels are 2'x4' in size.

The improvement in sound is dramatic. Not as much of an impact on bass as I expected, but the overall result is outstanding. The room is much "quieter," imaging is very precise, and the sound at higher volumes is not fatiguing as it once was. I guess all signs of better RT60?

Thanks for looking...

Thanks. I'm glad all the work paid off, the wife even likes how they look.

Vito (the dog) likes the camera I guess, checking out all the new "stuff" in the room.

One question: you see the three 5" traps in the front corners. Pic 12 shows the 4th, is there a better location than that rear corner? It is just a bit to tall to double up in the front right.

Ceiling corner maybe?

That's what I thought - hoping I was wrong. Wife poo-pooed anything on the ceilng, I believe the ceiling corner would fall under the same rule...oh well.

Hi dyazdani,
really nice pics! One question: What is the white thing you put in front of the fibreglass (pic 3)? Is it an additional protection to keep the fibres from escaping?
Thanks,
Regards,

It is Poly-Fil, batting that they use in quilts, etc. I used it on the big traps basically to take up a little space. I used 1x6 lumber and 5 sheets of fiberglass, so there was about 1/2" left over.

Thanks, Glenn. It will look even better when we get done painting the room. I don't really notice how bad the walls look, but the digital picture really makes everything look bad.

Finally got the room painted and installed the panels in their final locations.

Made a big difference in the look (and sound) of the room.

Nice job

Just wondering,i see your equipement rack behind your right martin logan and there is a wall opening on the left side.

The equipement rack change the way the out of phase wave in the back gets back into the room, diffusing it.Being aside a window and side wall.
The right side must have a bit more "presence" this way than the left speaker.
As they are "loaded" differently in the room.

Being a martin logan owner myself i'm curious about other people's experience over this. \:\)

Hi everyone btw , it's my first post.nice forum.

I do notice the difference that you speak of. I also have inbalance in my hearing as my left side is always congested (probably due to a eustachian tube issue). The only other auiophile in town is an ENT so we are working on it \:\)

Not sure how much each component contributes to the change in sound from L to R.

How thick are the various fiberglass panels you are using?

The panels that are in the corners are 5" thick, the panels on the front wall and at the reflection points are 2" thick with a 1.5" space behind them.
All panels are 2'x4'.

Is it possible to see some picks of the rear of the panels. I'm curious cause I might build some frames for my panels as well.
Also, how l did you mount them to the wall? They look awesome by the way! Thanks for the help!

Here are a couple...

These are the thicker panels, made from 1x6s. Not a rear shot, but you get the idea. The rear is the side with the triangle pieces.

Here's a shot of the thinner panels, 1x4s. I cut some pieces 1.5" thick and about 4" long and stuffed them between the triangles and the fiberglass to maintain the space behind the panel. I tacked them with a brad nailer to keep them in place.

In case you are wondering, I cut the triangles out of a 4x8 sheet of Lauan.

As fas as hanging, I didn't do anything special. The panels on the front wall are hung with standard picture hangers and braided wire. I installed eye bolts on each inside edge of the frame and ran the wire between them.

The corner panels were a little trickier. I used the same eye bolts but have two shorter pieces of wire, one on each bolt. I then used two picture hangers (50lb capacity).

Let me know if you have any more questions, I can take some extra pics of how I hung them if you want.

Man that looks so cool but now you've got me thinking about doing the same. I've been wrapping my panels w/ muslin and just stapling the fabic together in the back and mounting them with bolts into firring strips into the wall. They look decent but these look excellent! Thanks for the pics man!

No problem. If you do decide to build the frames, here are a couple of tools that cut my production time way down.

1) corner clamps: used to hold the 1x's while screwing them together

2) staple gun/brad nailer: the obvious use is for the fabric, but where it really helped was nailing the triangles to the frames. I was using a hammer at first, probably saved me 4-5 minutes per panel.

3) chop (miter) saw: I don't have one, I used a table saw and a standard circular saw instead. If I end up making more, this will be a requirement!

nice panels! i think i read somewhere in this forum that solid sides should be avoided, like the 1x4's used in the above project. am i mistaken?

also, how much do each of your panels weigh? just curious!

Solid sides are fine. If you want to spend the time, you can drill or route some cutouts in the side to get a little extra absorbtion exposed.

I've seen other guys yous drywall corner bead riveted together as their frame. Provides lots of side exposure.

Personal preference. I like the wood so I can rout details like a radius, or an angle on the edges to make them look a little nicer.

I would have liked to open the sides up a bit, but I used the 80/20 rule on effectiveness as I didn't have a whole lot of time.

The frame also helped me to keep everything square since I used multiple 1" slices of fiberglass.

As far as weight: the 5" thick panels weigh about 26lbs and the 2" panels weigh about 16lbs.

I was worried about the weight of the bigger variety at first, but it turned out fine. Actually, since they hang from two points, it's less force on the wall than the thin panels.

What type of fabric did you use and where did you get it?
