I have a whole bunch of plastic wrapped SAFB 3 inch thick 2X2 squares.
The plastic reflects the upper mids and highs I beileve, and I ca'nt take the plastic and wrap in drapes coz fibres still get through, and i'm kinda y2k intollerent, so my only mid high option really is auralex foam :-(, i'm gonna space it out from the wall though should get reasonble broardband down to 125.
anwyway,

I now have a huge amount of as I said earlier 2x2 3 inch thick plastic wrapped SAFB (sound attenuation blankets), it has (inch per inch) about the same coefficiants as fibre glass, it's mineral wool, so different stuff but same effectiveness more or less.

I want to use the 3 inch thick plastic wrapped SAFB to make some homemade bass traps... short of using them straddling at 45 degrees in all 4 corners... I want to make wood panel plywood bass traps. but noticed in the plans 1 inch thick fibre glass was used...

If I tripled the recipe to accomodate 3 inch thick SAFB, would the bass trap still work the same as the 1 inch thick fibrglass formula, or even better seeings it's 3 times as thick???,

Anyways, just some ideas, insights oppinions from a crazy musician.

regards.

Jason.

Jason,

> I want to use the 3 inch thick plastic wrapped SAFB to make some homemade bass traps... short of using them straddling <

You can use those straddling corners. Thin plastic has no effect at bass frequencies, so you can leave them wrappped and they'll still absorb bass.

> If I tripled the recipe <

You mean triple the thickness of the panel traps shown in my plans? That's not a good idea.

Thanks Ethan.
yeah that's what I meant, instead of 1x4 pine, I was thinking of 1x6, :-), I guess not a good idea, i'll just use fibreglass 1" as you reccomend.

Straddling the corners at 45 degrees with the mineral wool I have (which is the same acoustic value as fibreglass, or very close) how low will it absorb, will it absorb as low as your low bass trap? and will it absorb bass up to 300hz?

I guess will straddling 3 inch thick fibre insulation at 45 degree from floor to ceiling in my 12x10 8 ft high room be as 'effective' as building your custom 2x8 low bass and high bass traps?

Jason,

> Straddling the corners ... how low will it absorb <

It's not like there's a sharp cutoff. Rather, the absorption falls off more and more as you go lower in frequency.

> will it absorb as low as your low bass trap? <

Yes, if it's thick enough.

> will it absorb bass up to 300hz? <

Sure.

> straddling 3 inch thick fibre insulation ... in my 12x10 8 ft high room be as 'effective' as building your custom <

Yes, for a room that size that's what I'd do.

:-) Thanks Ethan,
Done done done...
Ok so if I double up the 3 inch thick SAFB that will make 6 inch thick... if I use clear sticky tape and tape the two 3 inch thick SAFB together, then put it at 45 degrees from floor to ceiling, that will give me even more lower absorbtion then yeah?,

OHHHH boy, now i'm excited...

Anyways, thanks Ethan and everyone, it's been a month on here studying, finally ready!
