Is it a bad thing to mount speakers on the wall (up high, or "flying"), pointing downward, as opposed to the same horizontal plane as our ears?

This month's EM shows a filmscore surround mix suite with them mounted up high pointing down, and wondered what the acoustical implications of that are...

Well I'm not an acoustical expert but sound coming from above definetely sounds different than level sound. Has to do with the shape of your ears I guess. Just play a simple sine wave and move your head slowly up/down. Listen to the EQ change. You probably don't want to mount your speakers up high after hearing the striking difference.

Ig

I agree with Ig this is not the best arrangement. Ideally you want the tweeter at exactly ear level, pointing straight at the mix position.
