I've been wanting to buy a bass for some time but wan't sure about what I wanted to put into it in terms of effort (searching) or money (I'm a cheap bastard)

Saw this the other night and tossed a bid at it and now it's mine.

It's not exactly this because this is an original 4 string and mine is a newer 5 string but the rest is much the same. Active electronics, black, odd looking, what ever.

If nothing else it was $175 well spent and another toy for me and the kids.

you got a Steinberger for $175!...take it and run, that's a great deal. These things are the best for tracking bass. Very evenly balanced and great tone.

Are you talking Music Yo http://www.musicyo.com/brandpos.asp?dept_id=3&Series=XT%20Series wood Steinberg Spirit bass? Quite a bit different than the graphite composites. But cool in their own way, great performers and great for easy schleppage too. Just bve prepared for someone to think you've got a gun at airports ; }

is it hard to play a steinberger guitar or bass sitting down? i'm pretty sure it comes with a slide out "knee booster"(my own term ) but does that raise it enough to play comfortably?

It's the XT-25 5 string. Not an original as I mentioned. It's a bass for a non bassist who needs to fill a sound hole.

Half price isn't bad and it's a quirky thing to own I figure. It'll certainly be much easier for my young kids to fool with than a full bodied jazz bass with a headstock to smack about.

Never much thought about playing it while seated though. That might be weird.

One thing I'm certainly thankful for is that it will stop this compulsive need to buy a 70's Rickenbacker 4001! I've had a strange tune on to buy on and I have no reason whatsoever to substantiate it.

I have one gotten at a cheapo price, but it had a good neck so I bought it. Changed ALL of the electronics and yanked the frets. It works quite well.

Interesting about pulling the frets out because a Rick just went by without closing and I asume it was because it was fretless. I contacted the guy and was interested in buying it and .... jamming frets on it!
I fought the desire. Thankfully \:D

I started just over six years ago, and within a couple weeks decided that I would play fretless. I play ONLY fretless five and six string basses unless I'm at a jam or someone's house and then it takes me a few minutes to get used to placing my fingers slightly back of the pitch again.

I use fretless usually in the cover band context, it easily works for any style. I have a pretty amazing rig that helps with that though.

My original (and continuing) intent was/is to buy an original Steinberger 5 string fretless. I just have yet to see one up for sale. I have yet to even see one!

In the meantime, my FrankenSteinberger works quite well. I chose the pickups after trying about 4 different sets. A passive set responded the best (a nice turn of events). It's total cost was roughly $400.

Actually there is a post manufactured for the purpose of playing while sitting down. There is a kit for installation with instructions (for guitar players). It's soon to be on the market in Canada. Made from 100% moose mucus membranes.

Just having fun, I've been working too much lately (Berklee and all). Good luck!

Bass came in the courier today! Cool looking little tool and my son was super impressed He and his buddies want to do a show at school need a bass. (bass player disappearance thing)

Problem-O #1
It needs new strings.... and it takes... double ended strings made for this system.

What the hell do I know! I figured it would be like a Floyd or Kahler but no. Proprietary strings.
Oh happy @$%^%in' day.

Anyway.. it's perfectly markless but for pick marks on the pickups so I'm pretty happy thus far.

Anyone ever try to cut down regular strings and rewind the end on bass gauge wire?

Just use the double balls. If you use flatwounds, they'll last forever. But, try roundwoundss first, as they are commonly used by most bassists.

Here's my link when I'm ready to buy strings:
