I just saw this while casually surfing: http://www.rockhardinc.com/theplex.html
Expensive of course but if it sounds as good as the original it might be worth it. I never owned an Echoplex but envied the sound of guys who did. The tube preamp in them had a way of warming up and compressing the guitar signal that was beyond pleasing. One guy I met seemed to be able to get a great tone with any amp when he used the Echoplex which he described as his "secret ingredient".If anyone has tried the new version I'd be interested to hear how it sounds. I might have to add another item to my gear lust list.

A friend of mine looked for it but has been unable to find someone who actually carries the thing. It was all very puzzling. Maybe it's not out yet or something.

I have an original Echoplex and it certainly is awesome. No other sound like it. It WOULD be nice if there were a good reissue.

The website I listed has an email address to get info about dealers. I think they are still looking for distributers because one link opened a page with a dealer application. The information on the website certainly claims that it as an accurate recreation of the original with the addition of a direct drive motor for the tape. This is claimed to be an improvemant over the original design. It is a tube design which is a good thing. I'd love to try one but I certainly can't afford it right now. I have other priorities for my home studio.

Yeah, a little steep eh? The problem is that if you don't already have one an original might cost that much also. I have some reservations about spending $1000 for a 30 year old mechanical device. I might rather have a new one with a warranty, if it was really the same or better than the original. Well I won't be getting one this year anyway so what difference does it make. I hope they manage to stay in business for long enough to allow me to get one.
