My personel choice would be ..........
" I still haven't found what I'm loking for"
George Bush's song would be ? Trent Lott's song would be ?
"sorry seems to be the hardest word "

A terrible song for the horrible America-Iraq situation: It's the final countdown - Europe Or what about: What's Going On? That's for the strange political crisis Holland is in. Soulstars

How about 'Jive Talkin' by the Bee Gees.
Let's face it - that Moog bass line rocks.

There's a wealth of Randy Newman material timely for this year.
"Rednecks" for Trent Lott
"It's Money That I Love" for Enron, Worldcom, and Global Crossing execs
"My Life Is Good" for Martha Stewart
"You Can Leave Your Hat On" for Christina Agualera
"I Love LA" for the Lakers fans on the board
And then, there's...
Political Science No one likes us, I don't know why We may not be perfect, but heaven knows we try But all around, even our old friends put us down Let's drop the big one and see what happens
We give them money, but are they grateful? No, they're spiteful and they're hateful They don't respect us, so let's surprise them We'll drop the big one and pulverize them
Asia's crowded and Europe's too old Africa is far too hot And Canada's too cold And South America stole our name Let's drop the big one There'll be no one left to blame us
We'll save Australia Don't wanna hurt no kangaroo We'll build an All American amusement park there They got surfin', too
Boom goes London and boom Paree More room for you and more room for me And every city the whole world round Will just be another American town Oh, how peaceful it will be We'll set everybody free You'll wear a Japanese kimono And there'll be Italian shoes for me
They all hate us anyhow So let's drop the big one now Let's drop the big one now

All round, all purpose: War's "The World Is A Ghetto".
Modernity overload: Parliament's "Fantasy Is Reality (in the world today)".
Philosophic spirit redemption: Parliament's "Everything Is On The One".

Notice how no one is choosing songs from 2002?

I'll dedicate a rarely-thought-of Bad Company tune to 2002: "Gone, Gone, Gone"I don't know if I'm happy, don't know if I'm sad, I don't know if I'll cry, I don't know if I'll die laughing. Did I have an ambivalent year? Yes and no. - Jeff

Yes. Autechre and Boards of Canada made good new music in 2002. I can't think of a single other relase off the top of my head..

- JeffDang...somebody remembers Bad Company. Hmmm. Must be old like me. What about "Dick in the Dirt" for OBL, when and if they find him.

Fixing A Hole, by The Beatles "I'm finding the time For a number of things That weren't important yesterday..." I imagine President Bush wandering around in his pajamas singing "We Are The Champions."

"The Eastern world it is explodin', Violence flarin', bullets loadin'. You're old enough to kill But not for votin'.
And you tell me, over and over and over again, You don't believe we're on the eve of destruction.'" - "The Eve of Destruction" by Barry McGuire
This song came out when I was in high school and we were all worried about nutty nations with nukes and little wars in far away places.

"sorry seems to be the hardest word " For the Democrats it would be "Can't Get Started" For George its hard to choose. There are so many possibilities. I thought of "Pretty Vacant" for his economic policy. Or "Give me the men" from Desert Song for his militarism. But I think "Should I stay or should I go" (The Clash) is the winner for the war (or peace) on Iraq.

This doesn't describe 2002 but a tune titled "Do You Realize?" by, of all bands, the Flaming Lips (I've never liked anything I heard by them previously) has made a big impression on me by, IMHO, introducing a comparatively deep philosophic concept to popular current pop music.
