I listen to smooth jazz most working days. I find it's easy to let the music stay in the background when I'm busy, but during a break in the action, I find I like much of the musicianship involved...

Compared to the rest of the offerings on the radio, it at least offers solid players, room for improvisation, and more diversity than other choices.

Obviously keyboard players are a big part of the smooth jazz sound, although maybe there's a little too much emphasis on keyboard as a rhythm part and most of the soloing goes to the guitarists and horn players.

But, I proudly proclaim... I LIKE smooth jazz. What d'ya think?

Smooth jazz is OK but after a while it starts to sound all the same to me. I find myself drifting back to the straight ahead stuff. Some of those old recordings of Bird, Coltrane, Tatum, Bud Powell and the like have yet to lose their appeal to my ears. The smooth stuff is good, it's just that I seem to tire of it a little sooner. I guess my age is telling on me. :O)

I guess you work in a dentist's office. My condolences on the job - and the jazz.

Ever notice how 95% of the presets in every new synth are perfect for smooth jazz, but about one in 400 is good for rock or REAL jazz? Is this some sort of conspiracy to neuter musicians?

What horn players? I keep on hearing the same sax player over and over again. It's "horn player".

I *usually* like classic rock stations. When I lived in NY I used to pick one up from Long Island, I think it was 104.3.. not bad. Here in the bay area I haven't found anything I like. There's the 107.7 the bone which apparently even only loves, its alright. The only time I listen to radio is in the car, and not even that often. If anybody has lived in Rochester, NY recently, the had one I think it was 96.5.. with the wease.. man that was the bottom of the pit for classic rock stations.

I'll fess up. I love 80's music. yeah, the cheesy stuff. Throw me some go-go's, thompson twins, simple minds, and the like. There's one here that's 'star' something. Fire away (flame suit on)

But yeah, I listen to radio about 20% of the time I'm in the car. I never listen to it at home or at work.

I think that styles are a continuum, despite industry categorization for easy sales and marketing. It is true a lot of artists try to target these slots, but there are smooth jazz artists and then there are those with these tendencies. Having said that, I don't listen to the Bay Area smooth Jazz station hardly at all, I usually listen to KCSM, 24 hour commercial free jazz. Unfortunately they don't play much newer younger stuff like Charlie Hunter, or any fusion, new or old (who does, sigh). But after midnight, there are a few djs who play some pretty adventurous stuff.

But as somebody said, you can often hear solid musicianship in smooth jazz. Sometimes I listen just for one thing, just like in pop music - lame tune, great drummer, or lame changes, great bass line. You have to be able to pick things out that you like, there is a lot to like in a lot of styles.

Q104?? Fair at best. But of course I always compare rock stations to their heyday in the 70s - when you could hear ELP during the day, Bowie in the evening, and Miles Davis at night - all on one station (Long live Alison Steele!) Yep, those were the days when a station would actually play Thick As A Brick **in its entirety**.....

Speaking of which I was listening to Cobham's Spectrum a couple of days ago, and the lineage to the Rippingtons is quite clear. Yet Cobham was sooo hip then, and the Ripps are sooo, uh, "cooljazz" now. What happened??? LOL

I used to think I was Libertarian. Until I saw their platform; now I know I'm no more Libertarian than I am RepubliCrat or neoCON or Liberal or Socialist.

This ain't no track meet; this is football.

I like several different kinds of music, including smooth jazz, mainstream jazz, latin jazz, rock and roll, classical, even country sometimes. There's nothing wrong with smooth jazz. Question: does Steely Dan count as smooth jazz? I think smooth jazz is to fusion what Nat King Cole/Diana Krall type jazz is to mainstream jazz.

smooth jazz makes me feel cool, like i'm piloting my own sailboat over the glass-like surface of some mountain lake, drinking a fresca and watching my babelicious wife sunbathe on the deck.

when i do listen to radio, i listen to npr or sports talk. occassionally i will listen to a top 40 station until destiny's child comes on (usually takes about 10 minutes). it's amazing to me that no matter what the format these days, all music sound almost identical! and classic rock radio blows big time...let's hear ledaeroskynyr/dc one more time!

I make my living playing a blend of classic (standards) and contemporary jazz in a restaurant/nightclub. I've found that playing smooth jazz is a lot more fun than listening to it, because you can play it with a lot more energy and dynamics than what seems to be allowed on most "smooth jazz" radio stations. Our sound is more like what we used to call "fusion" before that style somehow got such a stigma attached to it.

In my opinion, most smooth jazz is kind of like fusion, but slightly diluted, sanitized and highly glossed over. There's still a lot of good contemporary jazz out there, but unfortunately it's considered a little too energetic for most "smooth" stations. I'm actually glad that the smooth format exists, if for no other reason than to cultivate the public's taste for jazz harmonies and melody. Then the first time they hear jazz that's not so smooth, they can really enjoy it!

Maybe now that smooth jazz is starting to sound more homogenized and generic, we'll hear more adventurous artists breaking out of the mold (pun intended) with livelier modern jazz. How about a fusion revival, folks? Only this time we could give it a new name so it doesn't just seem reheated. Kind of like the rock stations did with modern rock by calling it "alternative" so they could sell it to kids who wouldn't want to be caught actually liking the same kind of music their parents like! Maybe something like "extreme jazz" would turn a few young heads.

In the meantime I'll just keep listening to my Syro Gyra live CD and try to learn some more of Tom Shuman's tricks.

Peace all,
Steve
