Thanks man. At the end of the day, I'm more a pop songwriter than anything else. Funny, after all these years of listening to metal and prog.

Sheesh, this song needs real drums so badly. It kills me every time I hear that cheesy, repetitive splash cymbal. I'd only thrown that in as a placeholder, and my buddy went ahead and mastered it without giving me a chance to fix it. But that's cool...the original master is still around, so someday...

<<

Yeah, at least they're loud. But boring. Loud and boring, the story of my life.

<<

Thanks. I love that acoustic line, which was the basis for the whole song. It's an Ovation that's pretty bright in real life (I prefer Taylors and Martins), but fits well in a mix. We used the signal coming in off the internal (Fishman?) pickup, and also close-miked it with, if I remember correctly, a CAD Equitec E-200. Then I doubled the part, as you can tell.

Guitar solos are pretty passe, but hey, it's my damn song and it felt right after that temporary key modulation.

Anyhoooo...thanks for your comments. I appreciate it. Between now and mid-Summer, I hope to record about six-eight songs that are semi-finished. Well, they all need lyrics, and most have no choruses or bridges. But I'll do them or die trying. Thanks again, Steve.

Wow, MBDG:

Cool tune. Loved a lot of the textures and especially the drum loops. At the intro and outro you have a flanged/osc sync nord-leadish timbre that I really enjoyed. I am curious if that IS a synth and if so which one?

The one thing that those drum loops were asking for (at least to my ears) was a (faded-in) hyper speed bass riff, after everything else had been added to the build-up. Also at the peak energy point (currently at one minute 6 seconds or so)it may help to pull back a bit on the textures and let the rhythms drive the tune for a bit (just a mixing thing).

This would extend the song by a half minute or so and still wouldn't tax the patience of the hearer. Just a thought.

Very cool as is.

Cheers,

Jerry

Joe:

I enjoyed your voice on all the songs. It's great to hear a baritone be a baritone. Your voice is very sweet and warm and it's nice to hear you are

not afraid to use it. I placed the songs in two categories:

In the first would be Christine, Love Ballad and Mean Mistreater which I think are your best three songs. (Especially Mean Mistreater with it's luscious arrangement). I hope you do a lot more in this vein and don't hold back on the richness. I assume these songs are yours, and their songwriting is very good.

In the second category would be songs like Wichita Lineman and Always On My Mind, familar ballads given the sped-up treatment. I do think these are effective in live, celebratory contexts but are very hard to make work on CD. If you are thinking of these as recorded material, I would take a look at reworking the arrangments so as to better integrate the melody with the backing tracks (foreshadowing, mimicry, echoeing,

thematic development) and provide an identity to the backing tracks (focus on a signature "comping instrument", for example). These are skills you have demonstrated on the first three songs I mentioned.

The other songs were pretty varied. I liked "Looking at the moonlight"

a lot and "In the heat of the night" less. They both strike me as songs with good arrangements which would benefit from some different mixing treatments. Some of these are just personal taste. I think "moonlight" would benefit from some grunge in the lower mid, perhaps a rhythm guitar or maybe a b3 swirling down low. I would lower the gain on the hi-hats and cymbals (may have to do it with eq if you don't have separate tracks to play with).

I think your sweet spot is with the first three songs I mentioned, and what a sweet spot it is! I would develop your obvious gifts in this area.

Regards,

Jerry

Hi

Check these ones from a Mexican Electronic Pop band (mine, of course):

http://trax.iuma.com (in spanish)

http://www.mp3.com/trax_mx (in English)

This music was made entirely with keyboards computers and some guitars and is 100% oriented to the mexican pop tastes. I can tell I learned everything I used to do my demo's by reading keyboard magazine... then tell me what do you think about it... have some mercy, please.

Excellent forum! I always enjoy scanning it, I hope to be able to contribute something of my own...

I would like to hear any feedback on my material - click http://www.oddballmusicworks.com/mp3_files.htm to get to a page of my mp3 files. These are all tunes on a cd I released, "Darkness in the Heart of Your Soul". I learned a lot from this project, and would welcome any comments...

Concerning the tunes by jtegan by Gilstone at http://mockinbird.com

David and Tusker, thank you for listening to my recordings.

David Bryce wrote:

For these recording the bulk of the strings were done on a Roland D-50 with the factory Arco String patch. Mean Mistreater and In the Heat of the Night used the Roland Orchestra MC-01.

I'm not singing these tunes, the singer is my collaborator on songwriting and arranging, a guy named Gilstone.

Love Ballad and Mean Mistreater are not original tunes. Love Ballad was originally sung by Jeffrey Osborn and Mean Mistreater by Grand Funk Railroad.

Hey Everyone,

Just stumbled across this forum, I can't believe I've never heard of this site - there's some great stuff here! This thread seemed like a good place to start, please check out the track called "Shade" at http://www.mp3.com/driftingthrough

I play piano and organ on the track and sing lead. I'd love to hear what you guys think.

Thanks,

Brian

I just uploaded a song called "ClonE". It's mainly JP8000 with manipulated voices, synth washes, static and the like. Also, if you have the nerve, try my side project (ReGurgiTron) site:

Hehehe... I really didn't expect to find so many MP3c peeps in here. Not sure what I truely expected, but I was surprised and delighted by the discovery!!

My own versions of "anti-music" can be found at: www.mp3.com/stereofect

The main focus of my (((stereofect))) project is the creation of soundscapes and sonic experiments through the manipulation of found sounds. I create deep space ambient works that act as backdrops or wallpaper. Some are created to add ambience to situations, some are created to act as musical interpretations of fact and fiction while others are created simply for the purpose of manipulating the listener.

That usually does a pretty decent job of scaring people off... but occasionally someone will drop by (who isn't afraid) and often they actually enjoy the stuff enough to wanna come back again in the future. http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/wink.gif

Anywho... if you wanna check it out, by all means feel free.

Cheers!!

StevieB,

I checked out your music. Really cool stuff! I wasn't scared either. Actually, I do similar stuff with sound design and manipulaiton of "found sounds". Excellent. Keep up the great work!

I'm back. Here's my comments on what I've heard so far, I've thrown in a few minor criticisms, please take them lightly as they are just my opinion which often differs from many.

Dave Bryce

I listened to Evil Genius - Nice tune...cool Peter Gabriel vibe...I dig the syncopated rhythms. I'd like to hear you go a bit wilder with the pitch bend-set it at a major third or higher like Chick Corea.

Professor Tundra

Crazy Sounds! I couldn't figure out how you created some of them, cool piece.

jtegan

I listened to "Can I Come Over"

I liked the tune a lot.

My Critique? Either a bit more or a bit less programming...I mean a more live sounding performance would do the track good. Either play more of the parts live or do some monster programming to give it more feel.

One other comment...you put a lot of delay on the vocal...I really don't think it's needed, at least not that much.

Jonathan Hughes

I listened to "Lumi"

I like it A LOT! I'm a sucker for minimalistic, interwoven rhythm patters like this. EXCELLENT!

My one critique is the drum sounds kinda suck but that's not necessarily your fault or anything http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/wink.gif.

If you can, get some better drum samples and/or a machine.

Xfactor111

Holding On to You

Cool song, nice vocals.

The vocal effects are bothering me a bit but it's a matter of style and choice really. Some people love that slap back effect, I don't http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/wink.gif.

The Drum sounds aren't great either but they're ok.

Apart from that, the love for the music is obviously there, Great Job.

I'll be back with comments on the rest of the artists here, let me do some more listening.

Not only is it weird that of all the people I listened to in this thread, I was hard pressed to find "bad" music, it is weird how many different styles of music we can find!

Here is my link:

The top three songs are from our new album. All the instruments were done by me, and everything else you hear besides guitar is synthesized (cept the vocals, tha's my girlfriend :-)

Dave, finally got a chance to listen to your stuff, and MAN, I've gotta say that Evil Genius IS a work of genius. One of the best all-electronic pieces I've ever heard. The mix sounds great, even in crappy MP3 mode. Put an album of cuts like this together, and you'll put Mssrs. Coster and Benoit out of business.

Smoker's Blues was also very cool - great vocals.

If you have time, please check out my humble selections at http://www.mp3.com/DanSouth

I just put the site up, so I don't have a great selection yet, but I'll be adding more in the coming weeks.

Thanks again for sharing your excellent compositions.

Wow! Extreme and humble thanks to both istyle and dansouth! You are both way too kind...

i, I didn't do the music to that game, unfortunately. All I've ever done for video games is a couple of character voices (one of my hobbies). Anybody got Star Control II - Masters of the Ur-Quan? I did four different characters in that game...

There are a bunch of folks' MP3 files that I want to listen to - I have fallen behind due to some...issues with i-tunes (system 9.1 is bummin' me out...), but I have returned to good ol' SoundJam, and hope to get to a bunch of them this weekend.

For any of you Forumites who haven't gotten into the posting and/or listening side of this MP3 thing - it's a whole lot of fun; plus, I think that it adds a whole other dimension to the forum. I heavily recommend it.

You can find any of the tools that you need at MP3.com

Thanks again, guys! http://cwm.ragesofsanity.com/otn/realhappy/biggrin2.gif

Okay, I started at the top of the page...

StevieB- that is some seriously minimalist tonal exploration. Not exactly my cup of tea, but still interesting enough that I played a few of the tunes. I particularly liked Why are Black Holes Black? Very tasteful use of space...it's amazing how much detail you can hear when there's just a few things happening.

F7Sound - Michael, you are an electronic animal - I checked out the Regurgitron stuff. The first two tunes have more squeaks and beats than I think I've ever heard in that short a period of time - very cool...you and StevieB ought to do a piece together...my taste definitely leans more towards the second two pieces than the first two - especially "Regurgitron's Love Song #1".

JamFree - Steve, are there Hi-Fi versions of these files? I liked what I was hearing, but it was very muffled. I'd love to hear higher fidelity versions. Nice Rhodes work, BTW...

Nocturne - very dark, very nasty, just like the name suggests. Really cool and appropriate use of synths - they compliment the sound of the band very well. "My Bitch" caught my attention, but "Waiting for Anything" really worked for me. Nice job. I agree with you how cool it is that there are so many different styles represented, BTW.

istyle - I love the way that you use synthesizers...very tasty programming and playing. Sounds and lines weave in and out of each other in a manner that just pulls you along. I particularly liked the solo you did after the robot voice on JuliaROBOT. With the exception of the Jugular tune, though (which had some kick-ass drumm programming that I thought worked perfectly), I'd love to hear a real drummer cut loose on your tunes, though.

DanSouth - Mike Oldfield meets Tomita with Alan Parsons rolled in...very cool shtuff. Loved the juicy sample and hold groove in "Rain Dance", and the drums and bass were excellently done as well, and really drove the tune nicely. The fugue is over the top, though...talk about a different style! I am a big Bach fan, so I totally dig this one as well - loved the touch of the bass playing the third voice. Sounds a bit quantized here and there, though....

Man, there's a bunch of talented folks posting on this forum! I am deeply honored to have all y'all here!

Keep 'em coming... http://cwm.ragesofsanity.com/otn/happy/rainote.gif

hmmm, Besonic just changed their format, for some reason HiFi plays aren't available from my page there anymore.

Try playing or downloading them from here: http://www.jamfree.com/music.htm

Black Holes Are Black is quickly becoming a fan(?) favorite. I seem to get the most (positive) response from that tune, which is surprising to me, because I myself don't consider it my strongest piece. Go figure, eh!?! http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/wink.gif

I have no idea who sang on it, I thought my friend could have done a better job of it. He cut the tune for a songwriting clinic he was going to attend, to get some feedback on his writing, for what that's worth.

Tune is ©2000 Doug Clark. Don't rip it off, or my head and my body will be quickly parted. :-) hehehehehehe!

Hey Dave,

Thanks for your compliments! Can I post a quote from you "Michael, you are an electronic animal" on my web site?

I've been in contact with StevieB. He does some very cool stuff with a minimal amount of gear! He downloaded some free samples I have on my web site and turned them into a real cool song called "Chain Letter Massacare". I hope he's posted it on his mp3 site because it's worth the listen.

Hehehe.... yeah... I pretty much mangled (or should I say massacred??) the hell out of Michael Oster's (awesome) samples. Still... I did manage to churn out a rather beautifully rendered ode to noise that should give your ears (and speakers) a pretty decent workout. http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/wink.gif

I'll be posting it for sure. I'm just in the process of "fine tuning" the mix before I upload it. http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/wink.gif
