As an avid fan (and owner of) Moog and Buchla modulars, I can't help but be amazed and excited by the wealth of new analog modular synthesizers on the market today. Has anyone here had experience with any of the new gear:
Technosaurus Selector
Wiard
Modcan
Blacet
Serge (still around after all this time!)
Moog CE
Concussor
Frostwave modules
Moogerfoogers (they -are- modules, ya know \:\)
Etc...

What do you like about particular systems?

I've got a jones to get some Technosaurus resonators, VCAs, and envelopes as they produce the punchiest, snappiest electronic percussion I've ever heard.

I played a whole day with a wall of Technosaurus modules.
This baby is a beauty. Very fast attack rates, original modules, pots feel very solid, rich sound, sharp as a knife.
I played also with a Technosaurus System A, this is a non patchable 3 vco synth. A very nice system to start with.
One con however: the ugly design.
But that's the only negative thing I can find.

Pim.

What is fantastic about modular synthesizers is that they are ... uh, modular. This means that you can use cheaper modules from companies like Doepfer, synthesizers.com, etc. for less critical applications and then employ the more expensive stuff for more critical elements such as audio oscillators and filters. I recently bought a sequencer from synthesizers.com to use with my big Moog system. It cost something like $450 and provides essentially the same functionality as the old Moog version which currently goes for around $2,000.

Not everyone can afford the best components in all places, and in some cases, the cheaper components might actually sound better for a particular application. For example, a lot of folks really like that TB303 sound, which to *me* is not a high quality oscillator/filter combination.

Long live the modular!

Cheers,

Erik

I haven't worked with the Technosaurus stuff, although I hear nothing but excellent reviews about it and am certainly intrigued. However, I DEFINITELY second the indictment of the ugly design, which to me mostly is because of the paint job. What's with the blue camoflauge? Just make the darn thing BLACK!

Cheers,

Erik
