Well, I have been to NAMM, though not for quite a while. I recall quite a few demonstrations with plenty of opportunity to ask questions. Yes actual hands-on may not be possible, but you can certainly interact with the people who know the products and ask questions. Also, even without hands on, seeing something first hand can give you a much different impression than a video.
